Robert Claudius Billing was an Anglican Suffragan Bishop [1] from 1888 to 1898 [2]. Born into a clerical family[3], he was educated at Worcester College, Oxford and ordained in 1857 and began his career with a curacy at St Peter’s, Colchester followed by a period as Secretary of the Church Missionary Society. In 1863 he became Vicar of Louth[4]. After this he was Rural Dean of Spitalfields and then Suffragan Bishop. He died (technically) in post on 21 February 1898 [5], having ceased active work in 1895[6]. A memorial to him can be seen at St Paul’s Cathedral[7].
