The Bride faces off against the Crazy 88.

The Crazy 88 is a fictional gang from Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" Vol. 1. Led by former super-assassin O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu), the samurai sword-wielding gang ruled the streets of Tokyo until the Bride (Uma Thurman) destroyed them all in the first stage of her revenge. Various real-life copycat gangs have sprung up, notably in Hong Kong and Okinawa plus various parts of Asia and the USA.

Notably, it is thought that there weren't really 88 of them-- they only called themselves that. It has also been noted by Quentin Tarantino in an interview that the Crazy 88 is not all Japanese. Stemming from the fact that O-Ren Ishii is half Japanese and half Chinese, therefore, her army is made of 44 chinese and 44 Japanese. Both Chinese and Japanese cultures relate the number 4 to death, and this played a significant part in determining the number of gang members. Note that Chinese Internet users often sign off using "88" as it resembles the Chinese pictogram for "goodbye".

It is also helpfull to note that the "88" was the caliber of the most famous gun of World War II, the gun used in the Panzer VI Tiger and its variants and was also earlier used in the towed form. Whether this is orgin of the Crazy 88 is up to the reader.
