This the first part of a two part story, the second part being To the Death.
Plot
While travelling in Asia with Alex, Lucie Miller falls ill. A plague is sweeping across the planet and she is one of the few to survive it. Alex's mother, Susan, soon realizes that this is the first strike in The Second Dalek Invasion of Earth. Once more, humanity will spend years under their rule, waiting for the Doctor.

- The Monk previously conspired with the Daleks in his last television story The Daleks' Master Plan.
- The Earth was last invaded by the Daleks about three decades before the events of this story. That serial, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, featured Susan's departure. Once again, they're using plagues to weaken the population and Robomen to enslave it.
- The interocitor was built by the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa in Renaissance of the Daleks.
- The Dalek Time Controller was seemingly destroyed by the Sixth Doctor in the audio Patient Zero.
