Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 4,325 people, 1,793 households, and 1,161 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,299.2 people per square mile (501.5/km²). There were 2,019 housing units at an average density of 606.5/sq mi (234.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.42% White, 8.51% African American, 10.64% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.44% from other races, and 4.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.01% of the population.
There were 1,793 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% were married couples living together, 17.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 83.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $24,351, and the median income for a family was $31,618. Males had a median income of $28,475 versus $21,711 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,819. About 15.8% of families and 20.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 34.5% of those under age 18 and 14.3% of those age 65 or over.
Notable residents
- Gene Autry was a telegrapher in the 1920s at the Frisco Depot, which now houses the Bristow Chamber of Commerce.
- Tom Paxton, influential American folk singer, moved to Bristow with his parents in 1948 and graduated from Bristow High.
- Zachary Lancaster, An extremely influential person in the Bristow area. He was an extremely talented and gifted vocalist who lead the high school choir to three state titles. He graduated in 2009 from Bristow High School and is currently attending Northern Oklahoma College on a full ride for his musical talents and is majoring in Mass Communications.He is The Voice of Northern Oklahoma College baseball which is also contributing to his full ride scholarships. His best friend Bradley Whipple is also attending Northern with him along with Rafael Diaz, a prominent athlete from Ponca City .
- Bradley Whipple, An important benefactor in Bristow Oklahoma he has helped the city out immensely. Ranging from vocals to athletics, He helped prominent Bristow alum, Zachary Lancaster, In winning the three state vocal titles. He is currently attending Northern Oklahoma College along side Zachary Lancaster and majoring in Physical Therapy. He was awarded a full ride for his contributions to the world traveling Roustabouts.
