Abbey Lee Kershaw (born June 12, 1987 in Melbourne, Australia) also known as Abbey Lee, is an Australian model. She is known for her big, wide-set blue eyes and sweet, angelic face[2] and has been called a supermodel.[3] She currently ranks 5th on the Top 50 Models Women list by models.com.[4], and is ranked 21st on the "Top Money Girls" list by models.com.[5]
Early life
As a kid, she was always in the hospital; when she was four she suffered from meningitis and had to have two spinal taps. She also had a tumor on the knee, and lots of broken bones from climbing trees.[6] She "grew up with 42 nationalities" explaining in an interview, that her primary school of 150 kids, was very multicultural.[7] Abbey Lee used to work in the bakery section at Newmarket Safeway, the McDonald's on Racecourse Road in Flemington and the Flemington bakery/cafe.[citation needed] She later went on to win the prestigious Australian 2004 Girlfriend Model Search.[8] After high school, in 2005, she moved from Melbourne to Sydney to begin modeling. She lived 100 meters from the beach and it was while at the beach where she got scouted by Chic Management's Kathy Ward,[7] the model scout that also discovered Miranda Kerr and Samantha Harris.[9] She signed with Chic Management within weeks.[10]
Career
2007-09
In 2007, Lee signed with Next Management and by March had moved to New York City.[10] On December 11, Models.com named her the “Next Superstar”.[11]
Kershaw turned heads debuting in New York Fashion Week with her Lauren Hutton–esque gap tooth and her pierced nose and nipple. She managed to walk a total of 29 shows at New York walking for designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Halston, and notably closing for Rodarte.[12] Kershaw was booked as a Gucci exclusive, impressive for her first time show in Milan Fashion Week. [13] Later that year in September Abbey Lee took a major spill at the spring Rodarte show in New York, regardless it did not affect her booking runways shows.[14] Kershaw was one of the fresh faces to land in one of the fourteen covers of V magazine fall issue; the other fresh faces were Anna Selezneva, and Eniko Mihalik. Each cover boasts a head shot of a famous model, either from the new crop of leading models (Agyness Deyn, Lara Stone, Natasha Poly, Anja Rubik, Daria Werbowy ect.) or the supermodel era (Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova), it was lensed by duo Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.[15]
During Paris Fashion Week, Abbey Lee fainted at the Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2009 Runway. She fainted just as she was about to exit the runway.[citation needed] Abbey Lee stars in the fragrance ads for Gucci's new "Flora" scent.[16] Abbey Lee has been the face of Gucci's "Flora" fragrance for two consecutive years. She has also been a part of their advertisement campaigns since 2008.
She appeared in the Victoria's Secret 2008 Fashion Show in Miami and the 2009 Fashion Show in New York City.[citation needed]
In November 2009, Fashion TV placed her first in their First Face Countdown for Spring/Summer 2010.[citation needed] Kershaw had to sit out the fall 2009 shows due to a knee injury, she had torn ligaments and could barely walk. She had been ignoring the pain since summer 2009 until returning back to Australia in December to have the ligaments removed.[8] Abbey was featured in the explicit shoot for the French magazine Purple Fashion published fall/winter 2009.[17] The infamous spread, shot by photographer Terry Richardson, caused outrage in the blogosphere, where Richardson was accused of cajoling the girls for his own sexual satisfaction. In his defense Kershaw said, “Terry doesn’t force girls to do anything they don’t want to. He puts you in a G-string in a pile of mud because you want to do it. You touch yourself because you want to. For me, that shoot was the truth about how things were between us both, and I felt good doing it. I’m not ashamed of it — why should I be?”[6]
2010-present
She has emerged as the hottest face of 2010, heavily in demand for campaigns, shoots and shows.[6] Kershaw was featured in the 2010 Pirelli Calendar photographed by Terry Richardson[18] and the 2011 Pirelli Calendar photographed by Karl Lagerfeld.[citation needed] In March 2010, it is announced that she will be the face of Chanel's Fall/Winter 2010/2011 ready-to-wear ad campaign. This news comes after she closed the Chanel Spring 2010 couture show, and opened the Chanel Fall/Winter 2010/2011 ready-to-wear show.[19]
She took her own self-portrait for the new Rag & Bone Do-It-Yourself ad campaign spring 2011 along with models Sasha Pivovarova and Lily Aldridge.[20] She earned $100,000 as an exclusive for Chanel, walking just two laps of the catwalk, for it's spring-summer collection in Paris.[21] She skipped New York Fashion Week for London.[22] V Magazine's "The Discovery Issue" crowned Abbey Lee Kershaw as the new supermodel.[3] The magazine called Kershaw "the biggest fashion export from Down Under since Elle Macpherson joined the ranks of Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington."[23]
Personal life
She currently resides in New York, NY.[10] She is friends with models Daisy Lowe, Rebecca Seidel and Catherine McNeil.[8] She has a pet lizard named Annie Hall.[6] Abbey Lee has 10 piercings in total: on her nose (her left nostril), on the nipple, a pierced belly button, and seven on her ears. She also has various tattoos: one on the palm of her hand, a peace sign on her finger, a little owl, and a tattoo hidden on the inside of her bottom lip. She's got two new ones on the side of her stomach done in white ink, which means they’re invisible, so she can still model.[6] Besides modeling Kershaw is also an artist, does abstract painting and uses oil pastels.[24]
On her sexual orientation she mentioned she's "always swung both ways" but she does not call herself bisexual, "just experimental".[6] Her boyfriend is rocker Matthew Hutchinson from the band Our Mountain.[25] The pair met when both were modelling in Melbourne and hooked up in 2009, in the Big Apple.[26] She's not an official member of the band but she has appeared on stage with them before, both playing the tambourine and drawing while they play.[22]
