  • Aga Khan Higher Secondary School
  • Army Public School and College
  • Public school and college for boys Jutial Gilgit, Gilgit Baltistan. This school was the first institute of private education in the Gilgit, it was initially called F.G. Public School for boys, but the name was later changed. As opposed to western system, where public implies non private, open to all schools, this school was actually run under a private system with admission based on a strict selection criteria rather than open admission to any one applying. The school was inaugurated in 1980 and the first batch of students started in Grade 1 to Grade 8. In the early years, the school accommodated girl students up to grade 4th, however, a separate girls school was inaugurated across from the boys school in 1983. Interestingly, the Pre-school and Kindergarten classes were also started in the girl’s school. So boys would start their education in girl’s school and move to boy’s school in grade 2. The first Principle of school was lieutenant colonel Karamat, who was a strict disciplinarian. The admissions to the school were based on merit in early years, and there was a written test and interview; with the Colonel himself. He was a very honest and earnest chap, and did not consider any outside influences. The school was initially an English medium school with an excellent curriculum as par with top private schools of Pakistan. However, in 1983, the education medium was changed to Urdu. In 1990s the system was moved back to English again. Therefore, the class of 1989 and 1990 graduated high school with Urdu medium, while the classes after that did so in English. All classes earlier than 1989 graduated in English medium as well. The school was started as service to military personnel. There was an increasing military presence in the northern Pakistan at that time in the backdrop of Siachin Gracier dispute. Gilgit was the command center for the military in the North. Therefore, early on a good number of the students were children of military officers and military bureaucracy. As the area lacked in quality teachers, most educators were hired from mainland Pakistan. Notable educators, who served the area admirably, albeit rarely acknowledged; include, Mr. Abdul Sattar, Mr. Bashir Haider Naqvi, Mr. Shahid Kawsheri, Mrs, Shahid Kawsheri, Mr. Muhammad Ashraf, Mrs, Muhammad Ashraf. Mrs Bashir. Notable locals included, Mrs. Zakir, Mr Amin Zia, and Mr. Shakoor. Gradually the school developed into a quality institute of learning, with curricular, and extra curricular activities seen in schools and colleges of highest caliber in Asia. For a far-flung area like Gilgit in 1980s, the school brought several original ideas. It was the first school to have its own transportation and bus service for students and auditorium of high quality, and a reasonable functioning science laboratory; things that may seem minor in a developed society but were of breakthrough significance for people of this area. The school has produced alumni of highest quality, producing excellent results with in the region and beyond. It has produced, military officers, doctors, engineers, civil servants, and business contributing to various walks of life within and without the region. Most schools in the area with the exception of the Aga Khan network schools have followed a system similar to Public School Jutial Gilgit; however, this school remains the original idea with an excellent impact in a far-flung area of the world. In later years Army Public School was started in Gilgit to fulfill the demands of growing population.
