RCRD LBL is an exclusively-online record label that offers all of its music for free via Mp3 downloads, while generating 100% of its revenue through advertising and sponsorship.[1] Developed and run by Downtown Music CEO Josh Deutsch and Engadget founder Peter Rojas, RCRD LBL offers music from emerging and established artists, as well as reviews, interviews, and multimedia content.[2] Launched in November 2007 with PUMA, airline Virgin America, and Nikon Inc. among the major brands that signed on as inaugural sponsors, the label began with songs by over 275 artists from 15 independent labels including the parent label, Downtown, as well as Modular Records and Turntable Lab.[3] Since its founding, RCRD LBL has lured larger acts to its label; notably, Moby released a free "mega mix" from Last Night through RCRD LBL.[3]
