British indie rock record label, 4AD, was started in the late 1970s by Ivo Watts-Russell. Bands in the 1980s included Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil (Watts-Russell's own band, who were quite successful) and Colourbox. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, 4AD signed many American guitar pop bands, including the Pixies, Throwing Muses and Belly.
