In Korea, kind of multipurpose building serves both office and hotel is called 'OFFICETEL' which is combined 'office'+'hotel' It can be regarded as Studio apartment or Studio flat(UK).

Normal office buildings are designed to just for office. But Officetel is designed for studying or working in day time and providing room and board in night. Because of the convinience that their dairly work and routines are all in one building, Using proportion of lawer, accountant, tax accountant, professor, and artist is high. trading company and small-muidium sized businesses are parceled out or take on lease officetel. Officetel is mainly built in downtown or major transportation point. So there are advantages easy to use surrounding business facilities. In addition, constructing scale is getting bigger, officetels offer convinient work and housing through building amenities like sports centers, shop facilities. Since the Korean financial crisis in 1997, the construction of officetels has been increased rapidly due to governmental deregulations and they are now taking a substantial portion of housing stock in the Seoul Metropolitan Area.[1]

50~100 m^2 is common size of officetel. Most Officetel has a single room,one bathroom. and it has kitchen and bed in one place. basic furnitures are set up in officetel. It's illeagal to have tub, balcony, heat systems through Ondol in Officetel.

History

The first officetel was built on Mapo, Seoul by Korea Development Cooperation in 1985.[2] After that, demand got extremely higher, so constructors and housing cooperations took part in building officetel.
