Pet Society is an internet social game developed by Playfish. The game, which is launched within Facebook, has been ranked as one of the most popular Facebook applications.[1][2] New players custom design their pets, choosing genders, names, colours, and features (such as; ears, nose, mouth etc.)
There are a variety of activities with which the user can interact with the pet, including washing, brushing, petting and feeding the pet. There are also activities whereby pets can interact with the pets of those in the "friends" network. A pet can visit the pets of their friends and perform the same activities to these pets (washing, grooming, feeding, etc.). A pet can visit other pets as many times per day as it is inclined. Pets will receive coins on the first visit to each friend of the day and Paw Points on this and each subsequent visit. Ways to earn coins in Pet Society include the Daily Lottery, visiting friends, winning awards, cleaning or playing with pets, winning hurdle races or betting on the outcome of hurdle races. Ways to earn Paw Points are varied and include visiting friends, buying items and using the stadium.
On the 1st of April, 2010, there was an April fool joke in Pet Society. There was an option of selecting the game in 3D, and when the option was selected, the game would show a 'loading' bar, when, after that would finish, a message appeared, saying "April Fool!"[3]
Features
Pet Society has a thriving in-game economy and launches new purchasable items to each of the stores every week. The application attracts new users through its long continued efforts to stay updated, bringing new features such as "Recycling", "Garden", the Pet Society Photo Album feature and the Pet Society Fishing Pond. As of March 2010, Pet Society offers the following stores and places in its standard village:
- Market - A new store in which you can find here all kinds of things like toys, party gear, musical items, cool gadgets and more.
- Stadium - This is where the pet can race with another pet. You can earn 30 coins by doing this. Your pet can also bet for a racer and earn coins if he/she chose the winning pet. Another option is to simply practice racing.
- Food - Here pets can find typical fruits, vegetables, meat products, drinks, etc. The Food Shop often offers weekly special items which sometimes reflect specific holidays or events. For example, Zongzi was sold for one week in the 2009 May 28 Dragon Boat Festival. Other holiday food items have also been offered for holidays including Halloween and Christmas.
- Furniture - This shop supplies various tables, chairs, couches, beds, shelves, cabinets and other furniture items for a pets home.
- Mystery - The Mystery Shop sells Snow White mystery eggs, Build a Plushie mystery eggs, and Dolls House mystery eggs. Mystery boxes includes: Japanese back-to-school Outfits boxes, French Passtreie boxes, Arabian Snack boxes, and Win or Lose Mystery Boxes. Regular mystery boxes include a small red box or "RMB" (Red Mystery box), a medium blue box or "BMB" (Blue Mystery Box), and a gold large box or "GMB" (Gold Mystery Box). These boxes, when opened, reveal a gift, to be given to you.
- Café - A more recent feature, the Café is a social bonding service where the player can visit random players' houses, meeting their pets. The player can also buy typical coffee-shop food and tea sets here.
- D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) - This place is where players can shop for wallpapers, floors, doors, Bathroom sets, Cabinets and windows.
- Clothes - Here players can buy clothes, shoes, hats, wigs and accessories for their pet to wear.
- Stylist - Players can change the name, gender, colour and features (e.g. eyes, nose, ears and such) of their pet.
- Boutique - This is the place where the players could mostly, only use playfish cash.
- Outdoor - The player can buy plants and different seeds for his or her pet's garden at the Outdoor store. Players can choose to buy flower, vegetable, or tree seeds. Trees occasionally bear fruit which the player can sell or feed to their pet, flowers grow into decorations that can be placed into decorative pots, and vegetables can be grown to increasingly large sizes to be sold for a large profit, but may rot before being harvested. Players can also buy decorative plants, outdoor furniture, and cash items that speed along the growing process. They can also buy cute petlings, which is a pet for your pet.
- Pond - Players can catch and collect fish (and various other items) by using any food they have as bait. Fish can be shown to friends and used as decoration by placing them in an aquarium in the player's house. They can also be recycled or sold, but not gifted. If the bait is bought from the Boutique, they can collect special fishes relevant to the week's theme or event. Purchasing a complete set of Pro Fishing clothing items makes the player eligible to catch a rare ancient fish.
- Treasure Hunt - Players can dig for dinosaur bones as well as various treasures in themed maps. Players receive 5 free shovels a day, which they can use to dig. Shovels may also be purchased by users. The treasure maps include; Town Forest, Enchanted Forest, Ancient Egypt, Deep Ocean, The Graveyard, The Moon, Winter Fairyland and a Lost Treasures map where users can dig up discontinued items that are no longer available in the stores.
- A new way to buy items - (As of August 26, 2010) Clicking on a trolley icon when visiting your friends, enables you to buy highlighted items from your friend's house. (Only Highlighed items are the ones available in Stores).
Levels
Earning a certain number of paw points makes the pet level up, in order to gain some coins, new features and special status. When originally release there were only 34. After houses were enlarged to accommodate ten rooms, an additional 13 levels were added bringing the total to 47. Pet Society had undergone some major changes, including Paw Point Changes. Points were being reset after each level. Nobody was sure of how many paw points needed, as paw points were hard to earn. After many complaints, Playfish changed the paw points back. In August 2010 pet society introduced further more new levels, increasing from level 47 to level 100, which requires over 1 million paw points.

The Great Hideeni
Finding the Great Hideeni , a mysterious black animal in a costume, in your house, a friend's house or in a Shop gives the player an opportunity to send a special gift to his or her friends. In Facebook, the availability of a gift is posted to a player's news feed where his or her friends can see it and click a link to claim the gift. Gifts are available to the first five friends who click to claim them; any friends thereafter get a message telling them that all the gifts have been claimed and keep looking for another gift post soon.
In October 2009, The Great Hideeni donned a yellow chicken costume and gave out Cute Puppy Plushies. At the start of Thanksgiving, he changed into a turkey costume and gave out Cute Squirrel Plushies. In December, he kept the same costume from Thanksgiving, but now gave out Cute Reindeer Plushies. During the Valentine's season of 2010, he gave Long Stem Roses, available in 12 different colors (dark purple, light purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, peach, pink, blood, deep fuchsia, white and black), while wearing a pink tiger costume. He was also dressed as the Easter bunny and gave out some eggs. There were 14 eggs in total and the rainbow, mosaic and human eggs were supposedly the rarest. He has also appeared in a white spacesuit, giving out galaxy themed items. He sported a new look in honor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and is giving out 15 flags of countries participating. The flags are being offered as long as the teams remain in the competition, although all 32 nations in the World Cup weren’t included in this group of flags.
In July 2010 he went on a short vacation. On July 30 Hideeni came back wearing an Octopus costume, giving out 15 different seashells. On September 9, Hideeni was dressed as a pink pineapple giving 12 new fruit plushies. Once you've collected all plushies you would get a yellow pineapple costume. On October 14, as part of the Halloween Special, Hideeni was dressed as a pink pumpkin, giving out 12 new Halloween candy plushies. Once you've collected all plushies you would get a pumpkin costume. On November 5 Hideeni was dressed as a pink monkey giving 12 different colored gems. Once you've collected all the gems you would get a brown monkey costume as a reward. For the 2010 winter holiday season, Hideeni could be seen wearing a giant snowball costume with wings and hands out 12 snowflakes which spin when stuck to your wall. Once you collected all of the snowflakes, you received a giant snowball costume much like Hideeni's, but without the wings and ears.
Petlings
The first update of February, 2010, brought a new feature to players: Petlings. Petlings are small bundles of fun that grow up to become any range of cute little animal "pets" for your Pet Society pet, the first petlings introduced being cats and dogs. Kittens are first available at level 5 and cost 1,000 coins; puppies are available at level 10 and cost 1,200 coins. You can only raise one petling (from fluff-stage to adulthood) at a time, and they need to be fed daily. Once you purchase a petling from the Garden Center, it goes into your inventory; at home, you can pull your petling out of your inventory and release it into any room of your house. A box will come up, asking you to name your new petling; names cannot be changed once they're entered as of this time.
Petlings come in several different colors (black, white, blue, grey, light brown, brown, dark brown and pink), with a variety of different appendages to make each petling almost unique. Eyes, ears, tails and legs can all vary from petling to petling. The second update of February introduced colored biscuits (which cost 2 PF cash) that you could feed your petling to change its color, with each biscuit colored to correspond to the color your petling would become upon eating. Currently, there's no way to customize your petling's appearance, besides colored biscuits and a new petling "makeover" potion. The 4 PF cash potion will change everything about your petling except for its color.
Cats and dogs eat different things; cats will request either salami, ebi sushi, milk or strawberry milk, while dogs request a tamago sushi, rare steak, sandwich or bone. When your petling is hungry it becomes restless and teary-eyed, and a bubble will appear over its head, featuring one of the foods it eats. You can feed the petling any food item in your inventory, but only the food the petling is requesting will satisfy it.
If your petling goes for three days without food, it will run away. Once your petling has run away, you can either pay a coin fee to have it retrieved, or post a status update to your Facebook news feed to have your friends find it for you. Putting your petling into your inventory does not prevent it from running away.
Once your petling has grown into adulthood, you're then able to buy another petling. As of this writing, you're limited to owning ten petlings at any given time, regardless of species. Once a petling has reached adulthood, you have the option of selling it for a third of its original price in coins. Petlings are not recyclable.
The third update of February introduced a third variety of petling: A tiger. The tiger petling could be purchased from either the Garden Center or the Cash Shop for 25 PF cash, and was raised in much the same way as the cat and dog petlings. (10% of the purchase price of PF cash items in the WWF collection, including the tiger petling, went to benefit the WWF.) The tiger petling eats ebi sushi, rare steak, chicken drumstick and lamb shank. Included in this update was a seventh color-changing biscuit: Orange.
The update of February brought a fourth petling breed: A coyote. The coyote petling could be purchased in the Garden Center for 2,000 coins and has the same diet as the tiger. This update also introduced petling beds: Baskets for your petlings to sleep in. Petlings largely ignore these baskets, but they are nice decorations.
On March 8, 2010 Playfish released lion petlings that cost 2,500 coins. The lion eats the same things as the coyote and tiger. Updates included random fur and eye colors now for the lion, coyote and the tiger. Also in March, Playfish gave players a chance to buy a baby lamb for 20 PF Cash. The lamb eats cauliflower, milk, broccoli, and leek.
For one month (May 21 until June 20, 2010), Playfish offered a bear petling for 23 PF cash. It could be bought individually or as part of the WWF Bear Bundle. The bear eats banana, bone, lamb shank and rare steak.
At the end of July 2010, Playfish released leopard petlings that cost 3,200 coins. These petlings eat the same foods as the lion, coyote, or tiger petlings. Random fur and eye color is available.
The Summer 2010 updates also introduced the Petling Resort and Petling Mansions, which are premium room items that can house up to three petlings at a time and keep them fed/happy without having to worry about them running away from starvation. The resort and the two mansions can be purchased for 45 PF cash apiece from the Garden Center. The resort is a rock and waterfall structure, and the mansions resemble fancy pet houses (one white and the other purple).
On September 3, 2010 Playfish released a bunny petling for 22 PF cash. The bunny eats carrot, leek, cauliflower and broccoli (and is likely the least expensive petling to feed).
Later on December 20, 2010 Playfish introduced Reindeer Petlings together with other Christmas themed items. It sold for 22 PF cash and consumed waffles, biscotti, tiramisu and golden chocolate coin.
