Young Out Here (YOH) is a gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youth community group based in Singapore, run by gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths, for gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths. It is also the longest running non-profit gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youth group in Singapore run by volunteers.

"We believe that every youth, regardless of sexuality, should be given his or her rightful chance to discover his or her identity in a non-threatening environment. Queer youths should be given equal opportunity to express themselves and build social and support networks with each other, without suffering hindrances and discrimination."[1]

History

Started in 2006 by four teenagers, Young Out Here started out as a support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths aged 16 to 21, providing a safe and secular place for gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths to gather together and talk about issues related to what gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths would face in life. It was started as there was a lack of focus on youths in the community during that period of time.

The first run of the support group started in January 2007, ending in July 2007, and subsequent runs have been conducted almost every year since then.

In 2009, Young Out Here began to use YOH instead of using yOUTh as their acronym of choice. Young Out Here also began their venture into organizing events, starting with their first event, Labels and Love. This is also the year when the Young Out Here blog was started. [2]

Support Groups

YOH

Young Out Here's core program remains to be the closed support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths who are 16 to 21 years old.[3]

  • Young Out Here's first run (YOH1), commenced in January 2007 and concluded in July 2007.
  • YOH2 commenced in December 2007 and concluded in June 2008.
  • YOH3 commenced in November 2008 and concluded in April 2009.
  • YOH4 commenced in May 2010 and concluded in September 2010.

The objective of the support group program is to provide gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths in Singapore a safe, secular, and inclusive environment for them to meet like-minded individuals, where they can build healthy relationships, build healthy self identities, and learn about the community at large.[4][5][6]

Each YOH run consists of 13 sessions, each covering various issues related to gay, lesbian, bisexual and queer youths.[7] Each session is limited to 10 to 15 participants with equal or close to equal number of males and females to provide a gender neutral environment.
