CHERUB is a series of young adult spy novels, written by the English author Robert Muchamore, focusing around a division of the British Security Service named CHERUB, which employs minors, predominantly orphans, as intelligence officers.[1] As revealed in the Henderson's Boys novel Eagle Day, CHERUB stands for Charles Henderson Espionage Research Unit B.[2]
Initially, the series follows James Choke, or James Adams, which is his CHERUB name, as he enters CHERUB and performs various missions. However, the focus later turns to his sister Lauren and several other characters who get vital roles in the novels. The initial series of twelve books runs from the recruitment of James Adams through to his retirement from CHERUB at age 17.
After the success of the series in the United Kingdom, the books have been released in the United States of America, New Zealand and Australia, and translated into several languages including French, Danish, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese. A film adaptation was also commissioned, and casting is underway. Man Vs. Beast was the last book to be published in the USA.[3]

CHERUB
Background
CHERUB is the name of the fictional organization in the series. After years of speculation, Muchamore hinted in the Henderson's Boys novel Eagle Day that CHERUB stood for Charles Henderson Espionage Research Unit B, this was later confirmed by Eileen McAfferty in a telegram in Secret Army. CHERUB is a division of MI5. It was formed during World War II by Charles Henderson; a British spy who had used children during an operation in France. However, the official administrator of Cherub was Eileen McAfferty.[2] It began with a small number of boys which swelled in size as the government realised its worth. After several years of operation it took a trial group of girls, which proved successful. Thus, girls have become part of Cherub.
Fatalities
Since its formation, CHERUB has had four fatalities. Two boys were killed whilst operating in East Germany in 1954 (14-year-old Johan Urminski and 9-year-old Jason Lennox, reason of death unknown). This resulted in the first version of the 100-day-training program and rules to stop kids under 10 years 4 months from acting in the field. The third fatality was caused by a mix of snake bite and being given the wrong antivenom, whilst operating in India in 1967 (17-year-old Katherine Field). The fourth died due to a landmine whilst operating in the Falkland Islands in 1982 (14-year-old Thomas Webb).
T-shirts
Throughout all these books there is a ranking system for the experience/skills of members
- Orange Shirt — Guest (no other agent can speak to these without clearance from the Chairman)
- Red Shirt — Unqualified — have not completed basic training (not allowed on missions)
- Blue Shirt — Members undergoing basic 100-day training
- Grey Shirt — Qualified for missions
- Navy Shirt — Outstanding performance in a single mission
- Black Shirt — Outstanding performances on several missions
- White Shirt — Retired (Staff)
Sequel
A further series has been announced which involves an almost completely new cast of CHERUB agents, centred upon Ryan Sharma although also involving the sixteen-year-old Lauren Adams, with the three books announced in 2010.[17] The first book, People's Republic will be released in August 2011[18] with the next two books, Guardian Angel and Black Friday following in September 2012[19] and September 2013[20] respectively. Robert Muchamore, the author said that it will be a trilogy and could be the last series set in CHERUB campus.
