Ace Combat 2 is the sequel to the 1995 Arcade/Flight-sim Air Combat, released in 1997 by Namco Ace Combat 2 continues the arcade style gameplay of its predecessor; albeit with some minor improvements. It is part of the Ace Combat series.

Story

The Story of Ace Combat 2 is as follows:

Military Rebels have seized Unified Forces sector NA-P2700. Striking while the heads of state were at a peace summit, political insurrectionists have seized and occupied the administration's center. Many institutions have already fallen to the rebels' orchestrated attacks around the world. Intelligence reports that the rebels now possess both strategic and long-range weapons. There sphere of power has rapidly expanded in the coup d'état, as has their military capabilities. Since the United Forces are already spread thin around the globe, UF Headquarters has formed a mercenary tactical strike force, code named: Scarface. You are to lead strike force Scarface against the rebel insurgents. You have full aircraft and ordinance support from the United Forces and intelligence will be supplied from Information HQ. The situation is tense and we have no time to lose. The fate of the free world is in your hands. Good luck. That is all.

Gameplay

Ace Combat 2's gameplay is very similar to Air Combat (its predecessor) however, AC2 has considerably improved graphics (both the planes and environment)and detailed features such as: moving flaps, air-brakes and afterburner effects. An exciting new feature is the ability to find (and shoot down) enemy Ace planes; doing so will result in the player being rewarded with a medal of the defeated Ace, that can be viewed in the games medal viewer. Also the player can unlock "extra" aircraft for subsequent replays. One more interesting feature is the branching story paths; basically two sets of missions split between Operations "A"lphaville" and "B"ellissima" they each contain unique missions and both branches lead to mission 21. (Jewel Box) According to the back of the CD case Ace Combat 2 also features:

  • Advanced artificial intelligence- cunning an calculating enemy pilots.
  • Awesome mission debreifings- dynamic diagrams and moving maps for planning surgical strikes.
  • Secret Planes and hidden missions- the better you fly the more you'll reveal.

Triva

  • The ADF-01 is featured in Ace Combat 5 as the "FALKEN", which is actually available to the player. Although it does not have the ability to launch missiles backwards, it has a laser instead.
  • Interestingly, there are no enemy Su-35's to be found in the game. But the "White and Blue" paint for the enemy Su-37 is used as a Special Paint for the Su-35 in Ace Combat 04.
  • The music track "Night & Day" was also featured in the prequel Air Combat. The AC2 version adds a Spanish Guitar to the song.
  • The Scarface emblem (found on the player's aircraft) was also featured in the prequel as well. Although the paint jobs of the prequel are not brought back.
  • The Enemy fortress found in the mission "Fighter's Honor" is also featured in Ace Combat 04. However; the fortress in Ace Combat 04 is slightly altered, being on an island instead of in the mountains. The ending sequence for the destruction of both fortresses are very similar.
  • The enemy particle lab "Pancake" also is very similar to Stonehenge from Ace Combat 04.
  • The legendary squadron "Death Rave 2000" has a paint scheme on their EF-2000's that is very similar to the Rafale B special paint scheme in Ace Combat 5.
  • There was an unlockable character in Tekken 3 that was named "Superfly".
  • In the 3D model viewer there are two schemes for the BS-2B (one green and the other is pink). However; only one set of the BS-2B is encountered in the game (Bear Tracks) and both planes are painted in a two-tone green camoflauge scheme.
  • The YF-23A has the most paint schemes of all the aircraft in the game (8 total).
  • One of the enemy A-10 paint schemes (the black and green) is very similar (if not the same) to the ones seen in Ace Combat 04 and 5.
  • The enemy A-6 paint scheme (the desert style camo) is very similar to the Yuktobanian scheme in Ace Combat 5.
  • Ace Combat 2 also marks the (so far) only appearance of underground SAMs (such as the ones encountered in missions "Electric Dreams" and "Fighter's Honor").
  • In the 3D model viewer, the B-1 is missing it's forward canards.
  • For some unknown reason, the Harrier continues to be a computer-controlled aircraft only.
