La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South) is a Spanish-language telenovela produced by the United States-based television network Telemundo. Based on a story by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, the melodrama focuses on the rise of a female drug lord.[1]

Telemundo will likely air the serial from Monday to Friday over about 12 weeks during the February, March and April.[2] As with most of its other telenovelas, the network will broadcast English subtitles as closed captions on CC3.

Plot

La Reina del Sur (literally "Queen of the South") is an original Telemundo super-production based on the best-selling book of the same name by author Arturo Pérez-Reverte, which has been published in 19 languages and distributed in 30 countries. Kate del Castillo, whose credits include Under the Same Moon, Julia, Bordertown (film) and Weeds (TV), portrays the main protagonist. As Teresa Mendoza, she will be transformed from an innocent young girl from a small Mexican village, to become the most powerful woman in the dangerous world of narcotics trafficking in Europe. Mendoza will discover, the survival instinct cannot be learned; it takes a hold of you when you least expect it. Mendoza never dreamt of being the queen of anything, so perhaps it was the instinct that engulfed her on that fateful day when the phone rang signaling the end of the simple life she knew and the beginning of an astonishing new one. Her lover, aircraft pilot El Güero Dávila, had been killed for breaking the rules and revealing secrets and now her own death had been cast. Running from her small town of Culiacán, México to the Spanish coast, Mendoza's path leads her to become the coke queen of Costa del Sol, expanding three continents and turning the tables on the men of her past that made her fear for her own life . "The Queen of the South" will not rest until el Güero's death is avenged, and she is finally able to turn the last page of her riveting story, on her own terms.
