Krasneno (Template:Lang-ru) is a village (selo) south west of Anadyr in the Anadyrsky District (Raion) of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, part of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia.

The village is a small settlement, population as of 2003: 95,[2] mainly consisting of indigenous Chukchi, who make up around 90% of the population,[2] though there is also a small number of Russians living there too.

History

Origins

The name of the village literally means "red", although old maps show the village as called "Krasnyano", meaning rich or abundant in the Russian "old believers" dialect, in reference to fish stocks nearby is a small settlement[6], located on the shores of Krasnoye Lake, from where the village gets its name with the lake being surrounded by red and brown rocks on its shoreline[6].

Recent history

On September 10, 2010, a law was passed abolishing Krasneno at municipal level[7]. Krasneno as an entity continues to exist, but it is no longer a rural locailty, this law stripped it of Selo status, it is simply an inhabited locailty in the inter settlement territory of Anadyrsky municipal district. The right of the village to local government was removed[8] and such responsibilities were taken over by Anadyr municipal government on January 1, 2011.[9] Anadyr municipal government also took control of all municipal property, all municipal property rights and all local budgets on this date.[10]

Economy

The village has a general store, primary school, post office and a cultural centre. Local infrastructure has been assisted recently by the delivery from Alaska of several cottages [2]. The economy is centred around traditional hunting and fishing, unsurprising given the number of indigenous people living in the village.
