The X Factor is an American television music competition to find new singing talent; the winner of which receives a $5 million recording contract with creator Simon Cowell's Syco Music record label. The season will air in September 2011 and will end in December 2011.[citation needed]

The competition will be split into several stages: auditions, bootcamp, judges' houses and live shows. Auditions for the show started in March 2011 and will end in June 2011.[1]

Selection process

Producer auditions

Auditions for producers began in a variety of cities across the United States: Los Angeles, Miami, Newark/New York, Seattle, Chicago, and Dallas.[2]

It was reported that The X Factor had broken the auditions record in Los Angeles, on March 27.[4] It was reported that over 20,000 people audition in Newark, New Jersey [5] It was reported that over 5,000 people auditioned in Seattle, Washington [6]

  • Originally scheduled to end on April 30th, 2011, the booths' opening ended up being extended until May 8th, 2011. According to the official site over 56,000 people have auditioned via this method.
  • After it was announced that people auditioning through this method was in such high demand, the booths' opening ended up being extended until May 15th, 2011. Simon Cowell had this to say “I am delighted that we have extended the deadline for our MyStudio X FACTOR auditions. The X Factor MyStudio partnership has been incredibly successful with many thousands of amazing auditions coming in this way. We want to be sure that anyone who wants to audition for THE X FACTOR has an opportunity to do so and that the very best will be seen by me and my fellow judges.”

Judges auditions

The last set of auditions that will take place will take place in front of the judges and live studio audience are scheduled to take place during May and June 2011.[8]

International airing

As the announcement of the show moving to America, Fox Network decided to host talks with several other broadcasters around the world about acquiring the rights to show the American version of the show in their country. As part of Cowell's contract, it was agreed that ITV in the United Kingdom would have rights to show the season, on its sister channel to which the original version of the show airs, ITV2. 7Two in Australia will broadcast the season and others are to be announced.[10]
