The Gingerbread Man (better known by his nickname, Gingy) is the talking cookie character in the movies Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After. He is derived from the children's story The Gingerbread Man. He is a main character in most movies and helps Shrek on his quest.
Characteristics and personality
The Gingerbread Man was created by The Muffin Man. He is small and a fast runner, making him difficult to catch. He is made out of a normal carved-out gingerbread with icing and gumdrop buttons. He adores those gumdrop buttons for his life, begging Lord Farquaad not to pull them off.
He is impatient. This can be seen in Shrek 2 and Shrek The Third. One example in Shrek 2 is when Pinocchio cannot move himself while he is freeing Shrek and the trio from prison, Gingy sighs immediately and goes down to help. He's also a little bit wild and a prankster, as it can be seen the moment Shrek and Fiona leave for Far Far Away, he and the others have a loud party in his house. He's also cunning and able to distract others, such as when Lord Farquaad demands to know where the other fairy tale creatures are, he gives an answer by reciting the Muffin Man nursery rhyme to which Farquaad believes momentarily. He's also able to stall time for Fiona and the other princesses in Shrek the Third, by trying to ignore Prince Charming and Captain Hook by singing the On the Good Ship Lollipop to himself after his life flashes before him.
In "Shrek Forever After," he is shown to have a dark, violent side. In a universe with Rumpelstiltskin as King, he fights and kills gingerbread animals for a living. He also has no qualms about trying to attack and bring in Shrek, despite being so much smaller.
Gingy in the Shrek films
Shrek
In the film, Lord Farquaad broke off both of his legs to torture him and prevent him from running away. In the process, one of the legs was crumbled to pieces. He also tries to warn the Magic Mirror not to tell him anything, before being thrown into the trash by Lord Farquaad to keep him quiet. At the end of the movie, the intact leg was reattached in stitches using frosting and Gingy used a candy cane as a crutch to make up for missing his other leg. He says Tiny Tim from the Christmas Carol, famous quote "God bless us everyone!". He's shown joining the other characters dancing to Donkey's song "I'm a Believer", he's shown dancing with the tiny figure of Fiona on the wedding cake, after digging Lord Farquaad's figure into the cake. He's also seen in Shrek's "Swamp Karaoke" singing "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" by Boy George, while chorused by the Three Blind Mice.
Shrek 2
Gingy becomes one of Shrek's best friends prior to the events of the film. By the beginning of the film, Gingy had obtained a replacement for that leg as well, also attached to his body with frosting. He and Shrek later persuaded the Muffin Man to bake up an enormous gingerbread man named Mongo, who breached the defenses of the castle in Far Far Away so Shrek could get inside. In the process, the castle guards dumped cauldrons of boiling milk onto Mongo, softening his arms to the point that they broke off when he pulled the drawbridge open. He fell into the moat surrounding the castle; Gingy tried to go back for him, but had to abandon him and carry on with Shrek's plan.
Shrek The Third
In the film, when threatened by Prince Charming and Captain Hook, Gingy's whole life flashes before him. This includes his birthday of sorts with the Muffin Man, his first day at school, his first car, his first kiss with his girlfriend, graduating college, marrying a lovely red-head Gingerbread girl (it's never said what happened to her, only that the marriage didn't last), and even remincsing on when Lord Farquaad broke off his legs. This sequence shows that Gingy endured months of painful exercise and rehabilitation to make his new legs strong (with scenes and distinctive sound effects lifted from the opening titles of The Six Million Dollar Man). It is also revealed that he was married (or had been at some point in the past) and could ride a small car (like Stuart Little), but made out of baked goods. This bout of delirium caused him to begin singing "On the Good Ship Lollipop." He is captured shortly afterward and placed in deserted bakery but is later freed by Donkey and Puss. He helps defeat Charming and the fairy tale villains at the end of the movie.
Shrek Forever After
Gingy first briefly appears at Shrek's children's birthday party. In Rumplestiltskin's alternate reality, he fights animal crackers in street gladiator competitions. He goes after Shrek when Rumplestiltskin offers a bounty on the ogre, but is easily caught. Gingy tells Shrek about the bounty, but does not continue, as when Shrek puts him down, Gingy is eaten by Puss in Boots. He appears again in the final musical number, and in clips from the previous films in the credits montage.
TV specials
Shrek The Halls
In the TV special, it is revealed that Gingy's wife, Suzy, was eaten by Santa Claus; he has been afraid of Santa ever since. It is also shown that Gingy vomits chocolate chips after he says he does not feel very well. He was also seen flirting with a cookie angel. And after Shrek apologizes to him and the others, he runs inside Shrek's house in terror at the sight of Santa Claus.
Scared Shrekless
In the TV special, Gingy is one of the many fairy-tale characters that go to Lord Farquaad's castle to tell scary stories. Gingy interrupts Pinocchio about to tell his story, and he begins to tell (a true) scary story that happened to him. The story was captioned "The Bride of Gingy" (a play on "The Bride of Frankenstein" or "The Bride of Chucky". In the story Gingy sadly goes to the Muffin Man's house telling him "his girlfriend kicked him out"! The two begin to talk and Gingy tell's him he wants a girl that will love him forever, so the Muffin Man makes Gingy a cookie-wife for him. But Gingy puts in too much sugar because he wants her to be sweet, but she comes out as an over-protective crazy girlfriend bent out on spending every second with Gingy. Gingy tries to get away but she finds him on top of the bakers oven. She clings to his leg, but he kicks her off and she falls to her (supposed) death into a bowl being mixed. Meanwhile, Gingy goes back to his house and watches TV, but when Gingy hit his new bride into the mixing bowl, she was formed into dozens of cookie-brides, now looking deformed. They all invade Gingy's house moaning at him, and it goes back to the gang asking "Then what happened?", and Gingy replies "They ate me?" Making many fairytale creatures running away and losing the contest. But the others realize Gingy was lying about this story being true, so Gingy yells "Look! It's Lord Farquaad's ghost!" and he runs for it.
Donkey's Christmas Shrektacular
In this bonus DVD you get with the Shrek Forever After double pack, Gingy is seen spending most of his time during the Christmas celeberation trying to save a plate of nonmagical gingerbread men from being eaten. He says things like "Guys, this is no place to take a nap, wake up, wake up!" At the very end he is seen "breaking out" the cookies with a miniature train saying "I'm bustin' you out of here" with all the cookies in the train. He is also seen in Shrek's Yule Log, a bonus feature on the DVD, trying to save every cookie Fiona puts out for Santa from being eaten. Eventually, Santa comes and pretends he is going to eat Gingy, chuckles and gives them a box of cookies, to which Gingy gives up and walks away sadly. yo-yo
