John Bauer (18821918) was a Swedish illustrator best known for Bland Tomtar och Troll (Among Elves and Trolls), an annual Christmas book for children published in Sweden.

At the young age of 35, Bauer, his wife and son were drowned when a ferry they were taking to Jönköping, the town he was born, sank in Lake Vättern.

His influence can be seen in for instance the work of the illustrators Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen and Brian Froud.
