The Southern Islands series is a family of GPUs developed by ATi Technologies. Products are expected to be released in the second half of 2011. Products in the Southern Islands series will be based on the 28 nm manufacturing process. AMD will build 28 nm graphics chips at TSMC.[1]
Early Details
In 2010, the Northern and Southern Islands cards adopted the AMD Radeon brand name. The Southern Islands will most likely be named the Radeon HD 7000 Series.
There are rumours that this series will only be die-shrink of the Cayman architecture.[2] Although this could mean no new features are added to the architecture, it could lead to more Stream Processors on a single die, thus increasing the performance.
Release Date
The Southern Island family is to enter mass production in May 2011,[3] with the first samples shown in June 2011 at the AMD Fusion Development Summit.[4] The HD 7000 series, looking at the release dates of the Radeon HD 5000 series and the Radeon HD 6000 series, is expected to be released in Q3 and Q4 of 2011.
