Commonwealth of Nations

My act was not vandalism, but a edit justified in the edit summary, so no 'reporting' is in order. Furthermore, you'll note that, having either written or rewritten most of the articles on the Commonwealth, including the parts of the Commonwealth of Nations article that are referenced and balanced, I do have the best interests of the improvement and promotion of these articles.

Please also note that, despite assertions by nationalists on both sides, the Francophonie and the Commonwealth are completely different institutions that are intended to serve different purposes. Whereas the Francophonie is effectively run by the French on a UN-style organisational basis, the Commonwealth is not run by any one country (in theory or practice), but really by a group of the largest and richest countries. The difference is manifest in the expenditure of each organisation; whereas the Francophonie spends €0.30 per year per inhabitant of its organisation (almost all paid by France), the Commonwealth spends 2.5p. The point is that, insofar as economic development and the wealth of members is important to the Francophonie (which it's not particularly), it is considerably less important to the Commonwealth. There is a comparison that forms the rump (sadly) of the short article on France and the Commonwealth of Nations.

More broadly, things like 'List of tallest structures in the Commonwealth of Nations' are effectively listcruft that serve no purpose except to implicitly support the promotion of the Commonwealth as a political alternative to the European Union (I'm equally opposed to 'List of tallest buildings in the European Union, and, in case you ask, I'm Better Off Out). That is because the Commonwealth plays no role whatsoever in the construction of those buildings, nor do Commonwealth countries per se hold any distinctive style of architecture, so it is an arbitary collection of unrelated data.

Nonetheless, if you can find an article that discusses the important of the size of stock markets to the Commonwealth or the relative importance of its members, it will become notable, and I will be very happy to help create an article titled List of stock markets in the Commonwealth of Nations by market capitalisation. There are numerous such discussions of the relative importance of countries' populations, GDPs, and (to a lesser extent) land area, hence their inclusion. Bastin 21:49, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for responding. The article is well done and I thank you for helping to maintain it. I would think the commonwealth represents more than just a historical association between Britain and its former territories. is it possible to have a section within the article that just briefly points out a few economic facts ? the part about the stock exchanges can be removed but the rest seems to flow with the rest of the article.
Well, indeed, the Commonwealth is more than just the sum of its constituent parts, which is borne out in the academic studies, but is not made if the article is just a collection of data about its constituent parts. If one focuses on what the Commonwealth does, rather than disparate data collected, that is far clearer. On the economic facts, I have read an awful lot of articles and books on the Commonwealth, and have never seen any economic statistics other than those related to GDP in contemporary discussion (although, when Imperial Preference existed and mercantilists still ruled the roost, trade balance was discussed). G8 membership, yes, but as an aside into discussion of other fora, not to illustrate the Commonwealth is powerful (or, in Wikipedia policy terms, 'notable'). Bastin 22:35, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Commonwealth of Nations economy edits

Please read my edit summaries for why I removed your edits. I can see from the above discussion you've obviously got into a conflict with another editor. The Commonwealth is not an economic union or a trading bloc, and as such economic data does not belong in the article. --Lholden (talk) 04:43, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Canada based restaurant franchises requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 03:43, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Mistergreek.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

File permission problem with File:Mr.greek.jpg

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Mr.greek.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 03:38, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (File:Vanellis2.jpg)

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Vanellis2.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. The appropriate copyright tags can be found at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free or a more exhaustive list at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/All. The basics for image use can be found at Wikipedia:Image use policy and Wikipedia:Image copyright tags - the infobox/navigation box on the right side of that page will point you to about 15 various pages that go into detail about various aspect of fair/free/non-free use of images/files. article on city data is not spam

How about helping me rewrite the article by pointing out what part of it makes it spam. until then you're spam label will be deleted. you are spamming. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grmike (talkcontribs) 13:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC) if there are articles on websites like adultfriendfinder and realgm there is no excuse for leaving out citydata which has a forum where 600 thousand members contribute. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grmike (talkcontribs) 13:25, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? First of all, I can barely understand what you're saying. I'm spamming? I placed the {advert} tag in lieu of a speedy deletion tag. The advert tag only suggests a re-write, it has nothing to do with deletion. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 13:34, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

>

I was going to say the same thing to you.

how can I rewrite what I have written if you don't point out what you think makes it look like spam ? I included information about it being mentioned on cnn to support the claim that the information found on its website is well known and famous. to make it clear that the article isn't biased i included 2 links to people discontented with it.

Proposed deletion of Largest gold companies

The article Largest gold companies has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unnecessary "stat" page

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. –túrianpatois 00:30, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

what do you consider unecessary stat pages ? there are pages for largest companies in the world, largest banks, largest Canadian banks, largest cities, largest countries. there isn't a page listing the largest gold companies. why shouldn't there be a page for that ? there are people interested in that information just as there are people interested in the largest banks in the US, Canada, and they have their own page. I'm not an editor on this encyclopedia page and I know you guys tend to overreact when random people try to force their views so I'm not going to take the template off the page. I'm going to leave that to you.

how is it that this encyclopedia doesn't have a page titled 'largest gold companies' ? that's not right.

Re: Largest gold companies

Hi Grmike, I saw your message on my talk page. I reverted that edit because the numbers were changed without any justification in the edit summary, by an anonymous user, without changing (or adding to) the references as should be done when numbers like that are changed. If those numbers were correct feel free to revert my edit, but please update the references to reflect the source (and date) of the new data. January 2010

This is the only warning you will receive for your disruptive edits. If you vandalize Wikipedia again, as you did to Talk:Sacha Baron Cohen, you will be blocked from editing. Your messages are simply rants with absolutely zero discussion on the article. Further, your messages are gross violations of WP:BLP given your accusations of anti-semitism and blatant attacks on Baron Cohen. 132 18:44, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

that Cohen displayed harmful anti semitism is not an accusations it's a fact. very few Jewish people who are old enough to remember the persecution of the Jewish community mid to early last century would object to my conclusion. an observant Jew cannot find Cohen's comedy in this respect, funny.Grmike (talk) 11:36, 2 February 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
This should not have been a warning for vandalism. That was my mistake and I'm sorry for using that specific warning. I meant to give you a BLP warning and have struck out the "vandalism" part. The "vandalism" part of the warning should be "unsourced defamatory content." --132 14:30, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your post to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents

You have posted a message to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. However, this is not the sort of issue which that page deals for, so I am copying the discussion to here. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:34, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

One of my articles Red Back Mining was given that template but since then the user who gave it that label and I have added and removed material from it so it doesn't sound as much like a news release. at whose discretion is it ?Grmike (talk) 09:52, 26 April 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]

I think you may find it is not your article. Stephen B Streater (talk) 10:11, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a question of this being one editor's discretion, but a matter of reaching a consensus. If the other editor involved now agrees that the changes made make the message unnecessary then you can simply remove it. If, however, the other editor does not agree, then do not keep on removing it: this is known as edit warring and results in being blocked from editing. If there is disagreement then discuss the matter on the article's talk page. I see you have already posted a message about this on that page. Usually this is enough, but if you cannot resolve the issue in this way it is possible to ask for assistance at Wikipedia:Third opinion or at Wikipedia:Editor assistance/Requests. However, I should like to emphasise again that this is not usually necessary: try removing the message first, and if that isn't accepted try discussion: most often that is enough. Finally, you are welcome to contact me on my talk page with any more questions. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:34, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please also be aware of our conflict of interest guideline if you have a professional connection to these companies or their securities (including those mentioned in other articles you've contributed to). 69.228.170.24 (talk) 10:50, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The only connection I have with those companies is that I'm Canadian. I'm looking to contribute to wikipedia's coverage of major companies by seeking out the largest companies that have no articles and creating them (you could say that wikipedia is giving an unfair advantage to companies that they have articles for over companies they don't). I'm a Jewish Christian, am I allowed to contribute to the articles on messianic judaism, Jesus, Christianity ?Grmike (talk) 11:04, 26 April 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
Yes you can contribute to those articles. I looked through the article and the topic seems to me worthy of an article here. I'll have a look through when I've got time and see if I think it reads like a press release. It doesn't bother me personally if you remove the tag, as I can always add it again if necessary - I wouldn't do this unless I also gave the reasons so you could fix it. These blanket vague criticisms can be unhelpful. There were certainly some third party reputable coverage, but I haven't checked yet to see if there is any third party input into any of the coverage (as opposed to merely printing company press releases). Stephen B Streater (talk) 11:16, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for you help ! sorry if I seemed a bit beligerent in any of my posts, I spend a lot of time on the articles and it was just frustrating to get the news release template put on the article after I spent some time doing the research to put the article together.Grmike (talk) 11:36, 26 April 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
That's OK. The most important thing here is for the articles to be good. Stephen B Streater (talk) 16:03, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Current market caps

While your hard work is a positive contribution, I feel it needs a little more channelling. In particular, any article changes you make should be useful if you were to take a long holiday. It is not appropriate to have current market caps in Wikipedia.[1] They are bound out be out of date within minutes and not very useful if you take a break. When I checked the reference, it gave different values. The most recent year end is sufficient here as an encyclopaedia should give the long view of a company, including lasting achievements, rather than transient events with no long term significance. A wiki like Wikinews is more appropriate for these. Stephen B Streater (talk) 19:54, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I knew someone would find that :) sorry for doing it, I had been updating the information for months now and figured that since the page was receiving many views (probably users and maybe administrators) and noone had a problem with it that it was okay. I know the policy doesn't really support what I was doing but I thought maybe there was a loophole somewhere.
Anyway, I think I figured out a way around it, but the data can only be updated monthly. I found out that if I look for the market cap of different companies, viewing the page in CACHED, I get data that doesn't change. would that be okay to do ? the page is more of a source of data than information so I'd like to have something current on the page, a source of information that is more up to date than at other websites. the data stays the same for a month, then at the end of the next month I think it changes, and I would update the information on that day.Grmike (talk) 20:46, 6 May 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
actually maybe I'll scrap that idea too lol. I think the best thing to do would be just to take the data from the companies on the global 2000 list (and red back mining has their 5.8 billion dollar market cap on a third party source) and leave it at that.
I knew you'd sort it out in the end ;-) You can of course enjoy the current gold price too! Stephen B Streater (talk) 21:12, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I did some research and founded sources for the top 7 or 8 ones, that I think best reflect their current values. have a look and tell me what you think.Grmike (talk) 22:07, 6 May 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]

S&P/TSX Composite Index

First of all I just wanted to say thank you for the work you are doing creating articles for Canadian companies. However regarding your recent edit, I just wanted to let you know that the S&P/TSX Composite Index does not include all the companies of the TSX, just the largest 70% by market capitalization. If you want to show a company is now part of the TSX you can add it to a page under Category:Lists of companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Also sorry for not replying to you about how I create the logos, it is fairly complicated and requires some knowledge of editing vector graphics. But in short what I do is find a PDF on the corporate website where the logo is still vector, open that PDF with Inkscape, then tweek and save as SVG.--Svgalbertian (talk) 15:15, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ok thanks for the information. sorry about that I thought composite meant it included all the companies (since it has so many there I didn't think there were extra requirements). You did a great job on the logo's. I'm enjoying creating articles for the companies because it gives me a reason to do some research on them and know a little more about the industry.Grmike (talk) 15:44, 3 July 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
if you're at the tsx composite index there's some news that will change it. Lihir Gold is delisting from it on July 12, 2010 after being on there for 3 years. http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-business/lihir-gold-to-delist-from-toronto-20100628-zell.htmlGrmike (talk) 15:47, 3 July 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
Lihir Gold Limited isn't part of the TSX Composite Index, it is just listed on the TSX. So once it is delisted it can be removed from Companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (L). Someone else is maintaining the full list of TSX companies, so for the most part I let him update it. But when creating articles for Canadian companies be sure that they are linked to on those pages. In regards to the Composite Index, for changes I monitor annoncements directly from the index maintainers. Cheers! --Svgalbertian (talk) 17:46, 3 July 2010 (UTC)%[reply]
I just assumed it was in the composite because Lihir Gold has a market capitalization around 10 billion dollars. should be in the in the 70 % largest.Grmike (talk) 03:39, 4 July 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
It is based on the market capitalization by the respective stock index. In Australia it largely held and is a part of the S&P/ASX 50 index. In Canada the stock did not gain signification capitalization, which is why they chose to delisting it from the TSX.--Svgalbertian (talk) 03:53, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
lihir gold tse info has it at 2.19 billion shares $3.69 each which makes it at about 8 billion dollars on the tse. maybe i'm misunderstanding something, but if it wasn't already on the tsx composite index (the wikipedia page used a 2009 source I think originally) then it probably wasn't there. a relatively smaller company sxc health solutions is valued very high on 2 stock exchanges, I don't think lihir gold on the tsx is a division of the company.Grmike (talk) 09:04, 4 July 2010 (UTC)grmike[reply]
Google is showing the number of shares issued and market capitalization across all exchanges. This is because all shares represent equal ownership, and can be converted between exchanges. See the stock at on the ASX and you will see about the same number of shares issued, and relative market capitalization. Not sure why there is a discrepancy, it could be different reporting of the two exchanges but RIM is a much better example [2], [3].--Svgalbertian (talk) 14:12, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article SXC Health Solutions has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Advertisement for a non-notable, back-office management business. References supplied are to press releases or routine announcements of minor trade awards, director appointments, and financial data; most are internal. Does not establish historical, technical, or cultural significance or long term historical notability.

Smerdis of Tlön - killing the human spirit since 2003! 17:21, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Incorrect. Being talked about by trade analysts, and being covered in multiple external sources is exactly what makes a subject notable. In either case, a prod should not be used for an article that developed and with that many reliable sources. AfD is the way to go now, but I feel that the article is fine and the subject seems notable enough. fetch·comms 20:13, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GDP of Canada

Hi. The source only had estimates instead of actual data for all of the countries. The two updated refs you posted are much better. Cheers, Oreo Priest talk 10:51, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The thing about GDP estimates is that they're just estimates until all the data are in, which usually takes at least 6 months after the year ends. Generally, the less developed the country, the longer it takes to get the final figure, often approaching two years. On top of that, before the year ends the figures are just a projection. -Oreo Priest talk 16:39, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Noticed you made a number of changes to Alliance Data Systems, all of them great. Thanks for helping to make my page even better! If you ever have any other suggestions I can follow to make the page even better, please reach out anytime to my talk page. Again, thank you. GarveyGirl (talk) 20:38, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alliance Data Systems Name Change

Thanks for your contributions to the Alliance Data Systems page. We appreciate your welcomed changes! In regards to our title Wiki page, are market face name is Alliance Data, not Alliance Data Systems. Because of the way we're branded, we are not a systems company. Could you change Alliance Data Systems back to Alliance Data? Thanks in advance for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Annette Rogers (talkcontribs) 22:18, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
