Shaymin (シェイミ, Sheimi) is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Created by Ken Sugimori, Shaymin first appeared in the video games Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and subsequent sequels, later appearing in various merchandise, spinoff titles and animated and printed adaptations of the franchise.

Concept and characteristics

Shaymin, known as the Gratitude Pokémon, is a hedgehog-like Pokémon that premiered in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Its' fur is pure white and instead of quills, Shaymin has green grass growing on its' back along with pink flowers growing on the sides of its' head, giving it an even more flower-like appearance. Its' cry is similar to birdsong. Shaymin resides in the Flower Paradise, a flower-filled field untouched by humans. Shaymin is found at level 30. In order to go unnoticed by intruders or attackers, it utilizes its' own form of camouflage, rolling up into a ball resembling a flower in a patch of grass.[3] By doing so, it blends in with the surrounding flowers, going undetected even if the attacker is beside it. Shaymin also has the power to decompose the toxins in the air and turn the land into flower fields in an instant.[4] It is rumored to have turned the desolate area of Floaroma Town into a fertile field. Shaymin's ability changes between Formes.[5] In Land Forme, its' ability is is Natural Cure, which heals status ailments upon switching out.[6] In Sky Forme, its' ability is Serene Grace, which increases the chances of added effects happening.[7]

In the video games

Shaymin first appears in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl along with Pokémon Platinum. It is not readily available in any of the games; instead, players have to receive it through special promotions from Nintendo. In Pokémon Platinum one is able to obtain a Gracidea Flower from a lady in Floaroma Town which changes Shaymin into Its second form. To do this, however, the player needs to have the Toys R Us event Shaymin that was distributed throughout the US February 8-14th 2009 on Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl, then trade it to Platinum. [8]This Shaymin may be transferred to Pokémon Black and White. Outside of the main games, Shaymin appears in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Pokémon Rumble, and PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure.

In other media

Shaymin is featured in the movie Giratina and the Sky Warrior. In the movie, Shaymin appeared to show a timid nature. While in the distortion world it panicked frequently thinking that Giratina wanted to eat it, and was careful not to lose its wariness in the Reverse World, where Giratina resided. Despite this, it tends to have an overall pridefull personality. It is especially confident in its Sky Forme. It is able to talk telepathically and Shaymin is able to change into Sky Forme, which appears in Pokémon Platinum; in this form, it appears more as a reindeer or canine than it does a hedgehog, and has large wing-like ears. Its signature move is "Seed Flare", which is a shock wave from Shaymin's body.[9]

Reception

IGN's Nintendo Team called Shaymin a "fan favorite".[10] Video Gamer's James Orry called it "one of the most unusual and highly popular Pokemon".[11] GamesRadar's Carolyn Gudmundson called Shaymin "adorable" and "cute".[12] Fellow editor Raymond Padilla called it "the cutest Pokemon ever!" He added that while it being only Grass type in its original form made its move pool "comparatively limited", its Seed Flare attack is "one of the nastiest moves we've ever seen". He also wrote that it would make a "great cleric" but wrote that "if you take away Seed Flare, it pretty much becomes a poor man's Celebi". Both he and editor Darryl Vassar compared Shaymin to a Chia Pet.[13][14][15] Official Nintendo Magazine's Tom East called it "one of the rarest and most popular Pokémon".[16] G4TV's "r_pad" called Shaymin "a rare and powerful Pokemon" and wrote that Shaymin is often used by players in one of two ways: either as a "special sweeper" or a "sub/seed Pokémon".[17] He also wrote that he was "psyched up" for the Toys 'R Us Shaymin giveaway.[18] Joystiq's Griffin McElroy described both of its forms as "delicious".[19]
