Mahatma Gandhi University, also known as M G University, was established on 2 October 1983 in Kottayam. The University Grants Commission of India does not believe that the names of Indian universities should be unique, so another UGC-recognized government-run Mahatma Gandhi University was established in 2007 in Andhra Pradesh; and was not challenged by the older Mahatma Gandhi University. The older Mahatma Gandhi University (formerly Gandhiji University), has been accredited (B+) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, India. The next visit takes place between Nov 24 and 27, 2011. The University has 223 affiliated colleges spread over five districts in central Kerala. University offers various academic programmes in the fields of Gandhian Thought, International Relations&Politics, Technology, Physics, Nano Science, Disability Studies and Rehabilitation Sciences, Special Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, Rehabilitation Psychology, Behavioural Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Nursing, Journalism, Chemical Sciences including Polymer Chemistry, Nursing, Hospital Administration, Environmental Sciences and Disaster Management among others. Currently Dr. P. M. Rajan Gurukkal is the Vice Chancellor and Prof. Rajan Varughese is the Pro- Vice- Chancellor.Prof. M.R. Unni is the Registrar. Dr. Thomas John Mapra holds the charge of Contorller of Examinations. Abraham J Puthumana is the Finance Officer, Prof. P.P. Ravindran holds the charge of DCDC and Mr. G. Sreekumar is the Public Relations Officer.
The University is funded by the University Grants Commission and Government of Kerala. It is a member of the AIU and the ACU. Association of Commonwealth Universities represents over 480 universities from Commonwealth countries.
The University enrolls 1,50,000 students on an average every year to 210 Courses in graduate, post graduate and M.Phil/Ph.D. programmes through various departments and colleges.
The students have been consistently contributing to the image of the University through their outstanding performance in NSS, NCC, Inter University Youth Festivals, Sports, Games and Intellectual pursuits.

The University teaching departments focus on research rooted in inter disciplinary frame work.
- The University has awarded approximately 1250 doctoral degrees (till 2009) for the research activities undertaken by the scholars in various disciplines. Online Access to these doctoral theses are available at www.mgutheses.org [1]. The University has published over 5000 papers in research journals of international repute. Most of the research papers are also provided online by the University Library [2]
- This university pioneered the total literacy campaign in Kerala(India) with their project in Kottayam(Kottayam was the first district in India to have achieved 100% literacy).
- It operates out of 8 global locations(Other than in Kerala and in other states of India).
Location
The University campus is located at the Priyadarsini Hills which is 13 Kilometers away from Kottayam Railway Station and 4 Kilometers away from Ettumannoor. In order to reach the campus one should take deviation from Ettumannor or Gandhi Nagar (from M. C. Road). The nearest airport is at Cochin which is about 80 km away. Private buses to Ernakulam starting from the Nagampadom bus stand right at the northern end of the railway platform at Kottayam stop at the University. The travel time is around 40 minutes, and the ticket costs Rs.7.00 (15 euro cents) Autorickshas ply the distance for about Rs.150 (about 3 euros).
Mahatma Gandhi University has made its presence outside its territorial jurisdiction through the 72 off campus centres – 55 centres within Kerala, 9 outside Kerala and at 8 global locations.
