Baku Museum of Modern Art (Template:Lang-az) is a museum of modern art located in Baku, Azerbaijan.
History
The museum was built at the initiative of the First Lady of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva and opened on 20 March 2009. The funding for the project was provided by Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The museum does not have fixed subject areas. The architectural concept of the museum foresaw no halls with corners and has open passages and inclined walls under different angles, creating a multidimensional perspective of pictures and exhibited items. Metal beams and designs placed inside the building unite all parts into one a "moving abstract structure."[2] The chief designer of the museum is a notable artist Altay Sadikh-zadeh, the architect of the building is Jean Nouvel who has designed dozens of buildings throughout Europe.[3]
Displays
Works of notable Azerbaijani artists Rasim Babayev, Ashraf Murad, Gennady Brejatjuk, Fazil Najafov, Mamed Mustafaev, Aga Houssejnov, Ali Ibadullaev, Mir-Nadir Zeynalov, Fuad Salayev, Farhad Halilov, Darvin Velibekov, Eldar Mammadov, Mikail Abdurahmanov, Museib Amirov, Mahmud Rustamov, Huseyn Hagverdi, Eliyar Alimirzayev, Rashad Babayev, Altay Sadikh-zadeh from 1960-1970s are exhibited at the museum. The museum also exhibits works of Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Marc Chagall from private collectors.[2]
Photo exhibitions of Azerbaijani photographers like Elnur Babayev, Fakhriya Mammadova, Ilkin Huseynov, Rena Efendi, Sergei Khrustalev, Sitara Ibrahimova, Tahmina Mammadova are commonplace in the museum.[4]
Decorated with conspicuous metallic structures, the museum has masterpieces of the modern epoch, presenting over 800 works of art of the Azerbaijan artists and sculptors of the last 70 years. It has a children's fine arts department, video hall, cafe, restraurant, a separate hall for private exhibitions, a library and a book store with materials pertaining to world art, architecture, sculpture.[2]
