Lakpa Gelu
Lakpa Gelu Sherpa born in 1969 is a climber from Jubing - 1, KhariKhola, Solukhumbu, Nepal. He is know for holding the world record of fastest climbing on the top of world tallest Mountain at 8,848 meter high Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) in only 10 Hours 56 Minutes and 46 Seconds.
He had started for the Summit at 5.00 PM. on 25 May 2003 and reached on the Summit at 3hrs. 56 min. 46 sec. AM. on 26 May 2003 and he reached down to Base Camp at 11.20 AM. on 26 May 2003. He completed this ascent from Base Camp to top and reached down to Base Camp in 18 hours 20 Minutes.
The previous world record was 12 hours 45 Minutes was set by Mr. Pemba Dorjie Sherpa (25 yrs) Climbing Sherpa from Rolwalling on 23 May 2003. It is also reported that Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa hoisted the National flag (6 feet tall and made of brass).
Lakpa Gelu Sherpa was the Climbing Sirdar of 12 Members "Jubiläums Expedition Mt. Everest 2003" permitted to climb 8848m high Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) from South East Ridge under the Leadership of Mr. Eckhard Schmitt (56 Yrs) Mountaineer from Shaftlach, Wiesseer Str., Germany.
It is also reported that this is his tenth times Summit of Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest).
Anyway, on May 21, 2004 Pemba Dorije beat that record climbing on the top in a total time of 8 hours and 10 minutes.
