Harmony Hammond is an American artist and writer. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1944. [1] She co-founded the A.I.R. Gallery and co-edited Heresies Feminist Art Journal. [2] In her art, Harmony Hammond asserts that traditionally feminine qualities are worthwhile artistic subjects and means for artistic creation. [3] To this end, for example, she created sculptures in the early 1970s featuring swaths of fabric, a traditionally female material, as a primary material; in the early 1970s she also made a series of rag rugs as art. [4] Harmony Hammond's paintings themselves show how they were made and are almost all abstract. [5] She is openly lesbian, and curated “A Lesbian Show” in 1978 at 122 Green Street Workshop, featuring work by lesbian artists. [6] [7] In 2000 she published "Lesbian Art in America: A Contemporary History." [8]
