While the intro was perhaps too North America heavy (note it's author, me, is an Australian), I still feel something needs to be said about the Irish TV market effectively being a subset of the UK market, and why this is the case.

The situation in Ireland is similar to that in Canada, and those familiar with the Canadian situation (and not with the Irish one) would benefit from the mentioning of this simularity.

southcoast and ch5?!

I live in Cork and i've never heard of South Coast TV! I know of South Coast, but all they do is provide BBC1, BBC2, HTV and Ch4 to the area. Also with the addition of Channel 6 it begs the question... where is 5? Ablaze 16:56, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone added it, I left it in there as I know that some deflector systems (RLO for instance) used to do unofficial opt-outs, but googleing around suggested that it might not exist.
As goes C6 - good question. I doubt Five would be too happy if they called themselves "Channel 5", though.

No, but there is Five, who have begun to hire people to work on an Irish advertising region and launch on cable, and who would be quite protective of their trading names - the company is still called Channel 5 Television. --Kiand 17:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would say it is unlikely that Five or Channel 5 would want to protect their trade name in Ireland it isn't as available here as other channels. Also Channel 6 could have easily named themselves TV5 or 5TV or Network 5 to avoid confusions with either French of UK television channels. There are plenty of TV3's around the world. I would say 3e is named 3e rather than e3 to avoid association with e4. Also Setanta Ireland was the 5th Licence. IrishTV (talk) 15:40, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RTÉ News Now

I've added a bit about RTÉ News Now under the forthcomming stations section, but does anyone think it should be included in the box detailing existing RoI stations, or should it be kept for stations that are currently received on television? Donegal92 (talk) 20:16, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Naming

This article needs to be changed to make it clear when it is talking about the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Living in Ireland myself, I even get confused reading the text! Ireland can mean either the Republic of Ireland or the island itself (which includes both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland). Northern Ireland is part of the UK (and hence TV is regulated under UK law, they get the BBC, get UK Freeview, pay UK TV licensing fees etc..) whilst the Republic of Ireland (Ireland (English) or Eire (Irish)) is a separate sovereign state. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.27.106.173 (talk) 00:18, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
