Mandarin Oriental, Munich is located in Munich’s Old Town near shopping along Maximilianstrasse and the famous brewery Hofbräuhaus.[1] The building that houses Mandarin Oriental, Munich was originally constructed in 1880 and served as the city’s opera house.[2] In 1990, the building was converted to hotel use. The hotel was purchased by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in 2000.[3] The hotel is contains several restaurant and bar, most notably, Restaurant Mark’s, a Michelin star recipient serving Mediterranean-inspired French creations by chef Simon Larese.

Mandarin Oriental, Munich is located on a side street in the city’s Old Town within walking distance of many of the city’s museums and restaurants. Nearby Munich landmarks include Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, Maximilianstrasse and the Hofbräuhaus.[4],[5] 360-degree views of Munich are visible from the hotel’s pool deck.[6]

The Hotel

The building that now houses Mandarin Oriental, Munich was constructed in 1880 to serve as the city’s opera house. It wasn’t until 1990 that the Neo-Renaissance building was converted to a hotel, then purchased by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group 10 years later.[7] During one of the restoration projects, the building’s foundations were found to encompass part of the Medieval city wall, a section of which can still be seen in the hotel’s cellar.[8]

Mandarin Oriental, Munich, a 2011 selection for Conde Nast Traveler’s (USA) Gold List,[9] underwent a substantial renovation of its 48 guest rooms and 25 suites in 2007. Today, the hotel reflects contemporary style with elements of Asian design aesthetics.[10]

There are six restaurant and bars at Mandarin Oriental, Munich. Most notable of these is Restaurant Mark’s, which serves modern European cuisine and has earned a Michelin star.
