Fanboy and Chum Chum is an American CGI animated television series produced by Frederator Studios. It is based on a first episode/short from Frederator's Random! Cartoons called Fanboy. The series was created by Eric Robles and was directed by Brian Sheesley, Jim Schumann, and Russell Calabrese in Season One and Eddie Trigueros, Brandon Kruse, Tom King, and Ken Mitchroney in Season Two. It premiered on November 6, 2009 on Nickelodeon. A sneak peek of the show was shown on October 12, 2009.
The series premiere drew 5.8 million viewers.[1] The second episode was watched by 5.4 million viewers.[1]
The theme song was written by Brad Breeck and performed by experimental punk band The Mae Shi.[2][dead link ]
Plot
Nickelodeon's first original computer-animated Nicktoon is about Fanboy and Chum Chum, two energetic super fans of science fiction and fantasy, who live in the Fanlair, a water tower in the sleepy, colorful town of Galaxy Hills. Their indomitable zeal for life is rewarded with comic adventures and misadventures fueled by their fertile imaginations, short attention spans, and madcap worldview. They wear their underwear on the outside of their costumes the way many superheroes do, including their idol Man-Arctica.
Characters
Main characters
- Fanboy is an enthusiastic fan of comic books, fantasy, science fiction and action figures. Fanboy, the show's main protagonist, wears a green unitard with his logo on the chest, purple cowl, cape and gloves, black high-top sneakers, and his trusty underwear on the outside of his costume. In the pilot from Random! Cartoons, Fanboy wears a grey unitard. Fanboy has an active imagination, a zeal for fun, frolic, and adventure, and he enjoys spending all of his time with his best pal, Chum Chum. His unique and simple life perspective tends to cause him trouble, but he usually finds a way to weasel out of any consequences. It was once mentioned in one of the episodes that he, in fact, has a glass eye due to having Chum Chum poking one of his eyes out when they were in preschool. Voiced by David Hornsby.
- Chum Chum is the show's deuteragonist as Fanboy's best friend and sidekick. Although he is younger than the other main characters, he is still in the same class as them. Show creator Eric Robles explained on the Nickelodeon message board that this is because Fanboy snuck him into his class and the teacher never noticed the age difference. Chum Chum is extremely energetic and high-spirited, and possesses an indomitable enthusiasm and childlike jocularity. Chum Chum has brown hair, wears a black eye mask and gloves, an orange and yellow uniform with his logo on the chest, a yellow cape, black high-top sneakers, and his underwear on the outside of his costume. In the pilot from Random! Cartoons, Chum Chum wears an orange collared shirt with yellow buttons on the chest instead of his logo. Chum Chum seems to be incapable of achieving more than 3 points on Boog's "Chimp Chomp" video game, although Chum Chum is ecstatic even when he loses. Voiced by Nika Futterman. In the pilot from Random! Cartoons, he was voiced by Nancy Cartwright.
- Kyle is a fellow classmate of Fanboy and Chum Chum. He's an insecure pre-teen wizard who loathes Fanboy and Chum Chum for their lack of intelligence, but he secretly yearns for their friendship. He appears to be one of only two children with actual powers; The other would be his archrival, Sigmund the Sorcerer. Kyle was expelled from his wizarding school, Milkweed Academy, for turning his teacher Professor Flan, into a raspberry flan. "Delicious old fool," Kyle said of him. Kyle is now reluctantly enrolled in Fanboy and Chum Chum's regular public school, where he seems to have very few friends. Fanboy and Chum Chum typically forget that Kyle has wizardly powers, and the effort of reminding them usually infuriates Kyle. He wears a scarlet and yellow striped shirt with jeans, red high-top sneakers, and a black cape. He has red hair and very large front teeth with braces and he speaks in a British accent. As Kyle struggles to be re-admitted to Milkweed, he often suffers painful indignities, often a result of Fanboy and Chum Chum's shenanigans, but Kyle never seems to be any worse for the wear. Voiced by Jamie Kennedy.
Supporting characters
- Boogregard "Boog" Shlizetti[3] is a short-tempered bop-happy bully who is obsessed with the video game Chimp Chomp (a parody of Donkey Kong), which he plays at the Frosty Mart, often instead of working. He has mentioned twice that he grew up in a plastic bubble (an homage to John Travolta, who starred in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble), and it becomes a major plot point in "Fanboy in the Plastic Bubble." Boog even talks like Travolta's character, Vinnie Barbarino, in Welcome Back, Kotter. He has a prized muscle car named Sandy, which is a possible nod to the Travolta movie Grease. He is an antagonist of the show. Voiced by Jeff Glen Bennett.
- Leonard "Lenny" Flynn-Boyle is the accident prone junior manager of the Frosty Mart. He finds Fanboy and Chum Chum irritating and sometimes gets a "stress twitch" when annoyed by them. He also owns a bike he calls "Bikey". His first appearance was in "Dollar Day." Voiced by Wyatt Cenac. In the pilot from Random! Cartoons, he was Caucasian with orange hair and bore a general resemblance to Napoleon Dynamite, and was voiced by Dan Castellaneta.
- Ozwald "Oz" Harmounian[4] is the proprietor of the local comic shop, Oz Comix, which Fanboy and Chum Chum frequent. The boys consider Oz to be "the most knowledgeable human being ever," yet in reality, he is a nerdish know-it-all who lives with his elderly mother. He often says "seriously" as a means of punctuating his opinions. Oz maintains a vast stock of comics and collectibles, all of which he hoards, and none of which he is willing to sell. He is plump, has a ponytail, a beard and wears a black high collared leather jacket. It is not known how old Oz is, but he is quite likely of the age when it is no longer cool to be living with one's mother. Voiced by Josh Duhamel.
- Dollar-nator is a sophisticated computerized intelligence system built by Fanboy in the future, and sent back in time by Fanboy to bail Fanboy and Chum Chum out of a jam in 'Dollar Day'. He has made numerous appearances on the show and he is someone the boys can rely on in a jam. Dollar-nator has many surprise skills and talents. He is an obvious parody of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator character, as Dollar-nator has a gap between his teeth, a thick Austrian accent and he materialized from the future. Dollar-nator is crafted from parts of a Chimp Chomp machine, a Pong-style video game, a restaurant grade hot dog steamer, a microwave oven and other components as yet revealed. In "Back from the Future", it is revealed that he also is a time machine. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Mr. Hank Mufflin is Fanboy and Chum Chum's grouchy, yet often playful, teacher. Mufflin usually considers the boys to be annoying and beneath recognition, except when referring to Fanboy as "Purple Kid" and to Chum Chum as "Talking Racoon". His dispassion for teaching is punctuated by his dull vocal tone. Occasionally, however, Mufflin will indulge himself a shred of youthful exuberance. He is potentially senile and he hates almost every aspect of his job. According to show canon, Mufflin will be able to retire in approximately 12 years. He has a gravely, monotonous voice and a lazy eye. Voiced by Jeff Glen Bennett.
- Janitor Russ Poopatine is a janitor at Fanboy and Chum Chum's school and another major antagonist. He is a parody of Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars. He is a pale, skinny, gnarled old man who wears a dark hooded shirt. Several of his lines in his debut episode "The Janitor Strikes Back" (the title, of course a nod to The Empire Strikes Back) are direct parodies of lines spoken by Palpatine and Darth Vader. For example, in The Janitor Strikes Back, Poopatine says, "And now gum, you will die," which is a take on "and now Young Skywalker, you will die.". In episode "Fanboy Stinks", Poopatine attempts to wrangle Chum Chum's pecan log stuck to the floor, falls over and says "The force is strong with this pecan log". Poopatine rides around in a cart named Brenda, who communicates by beeping in a manner similar to R2D2. Poopatine has a strong hatred of gum and saltwater taffy. Poopatine tries to destroy the bubble gum monster Yum Yum, until it saves his life. In "The Janitor's Apprentice", it is revealed he has a trash collection and a trash receptacle called the "Dump Star", a nod to the Star Wars Death Star and a pun on the word "dumpster". As a running show gag, whenever Poopatine's name is spoken, Chum Chum says, "Poop!" Voiced by Steve Tompkins.
- Man-Arctica is the sub-zero superhero who scours the cosmos looking for scofflaws to "put on ice." His biggest fans are Fanboy, Chum Chum, most of the other children, and the Secret Shopper. Man-Arctica balances a mild disdain for humanity against his duty to save them from harm. He often refers to children as "earth larvae". Although Man-Arctica enjoys being a hero, he also appreciates spending quality time alone in his Igloo of Ice-olation. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Yo is another of Fanboy and Chum Chum's classmates. She is a happy-go-lucky gadget fangirl who loves her Yamaguchi digital pets (a parody of Tamagotchi). One of her pets is a cat named Scampers. She usually acts as an antagonist. She has a rather insane crush on Chum Chum. Yo has black hair, wears a yellow shirt, a plaid skirt, and a frog-shaped backpack. She is shown to be a talented prankster, dominating Fanboy on Prank Day. Voiced by Dyana Liu.
Minor characters
- Agent Johnson is the do-it-all authority figure in Galaxy Hills. As an officer with the toy police, he attempted to recall Agent 8 in "Total Recall". At the end of "Jingle Fever", he appears again as a Frosty Mart official to congratulate Fanboy and Chum Chum for their jingle composition and awarded them their 1 million Frosty Bucks. In "A Bopwork Orange", he wanted to fire Boog because of his mistreatment of the Frosty Mart's customers. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Fedora Man is one of the delivery people in Galaxy Hills. He wears a green and white jacket and a fedora. He first appears in "The Hard Sell" as an Oz Comix customer, where he buys a pickle jar. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Secret Shopper first appeared to evaluate Frosty Mart product quality and customer service in the episode "The Secret Shopper". While he is a re-texture of Fedora Man, his different voice, personality and clothing make him a distinctive character. Voiced by Jeff Bennett
- Fankylechum is a nerdish, good-spirited classmate of the boys. His name is a was originally a portmanteau unintentionally made up by Fanboy, Chum Chum, and Kyle when trying to fool Mr. Mufflin into getting them out of school forever, but their plan fails when he calls an actual character who has the name and excuses him from all school forever but is later actually back in the school. He wears glasses and a school uniform. He appears in "Excuse Me" and reappears in "Saving Private Chum Chum" as one of Fanboy's helpers along with Yo, Chris Chuggy, Duke, Lupe, Michael Johnson and Kyle. Voiced by Jamie Kennedy.
- Dirty Bird is a seagull that often makes cameos throughout the show. He was first called, "Dirty Bird", in the episode "FanBot", after Chum Chum saw him pecking on Fanboy's brain. He said it again on, "Berry Sick", in which he is drinking Fanboy and Chum Chum's Frosty Freezy Freeze.
- Chris Chuggy is a classmate of Fanboy and Chum Chum's. He seems unable to form sentences or words, but is able to communicate with the only phoneme he can utter: "Wah." He also appears in "Saving Private Chum Chum" as one of Fanboy's helpers and is often seen in class with the boys. Chuggy is roundish with orange hair, and is shown to wear a light blue shirt with a chicken on it. Voiced by Eric Robles.
- Scrivener Elf is an elf Kyle creates in "The Janitor Strikes Back" to do his homework and other tasks. He is seen in other episodes writing notes for Kyle. He is purple and wears burlap clothes like people in the Middle Ages. He also has buck teeth and pointed ears. He is rather shiftless and is the closest thing to being one of Kyle's friends. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Lupe is a kind-spirited girl in Fanboy and Chum Chum's class. In the episode "Fanboyfriend," she forms a crush on Fanboy after he rescued her from a nearby spider. She once mentioned that she has an uncle who married a chicken and was as crazy as Chum Chum. As kind as she is, she also has a tough side, as seen in "Wizboy" when she punched Kyle after he de-levitated into her lunch. Lupe has dark brown hair in buns and is usually seen wearing a green striped top. She has a Mexican accent and is voiced by Candi Milo.
- Necronomicon is a talking book of spells who is both a companion to Kyle, as well as someone who nags him about the moral implications of his choices. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Sigmund is Kyle's more successful and skillful wizard rival from Kyle's former school for wizards, Milkweed Academy. Sigmund first appeared in "Sigmund the Sorcerer" and made a cameo in "Freeze Tag". He is in his teens and speaks in a German accent. The fact that he has his own magic show makes him one of Fanboy and Chum Chum's many idols. Sigmund has white hair and wears elegant clothes under a long jacket, and wears fingerless gloves.[5][dead link ] Sigmund may have more fame and fortune, but Kyle has Fanboy and Chum Chum as friends. Clearly Sigmund retains the upper-hand. His catchphrase is "You've been dazzled!". Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Lunch Lady Cram is the new strict lunch lady who replaced the former strict lunch lady. Cram's most popular dish, glop, is made from an unappealing mound of meat, sauce and other horror. She doesn't let anyone out of the cafeteria until they clean their tray and she doesn't allow anyone to throw away her food. She is revealed to have gotten her powers from her hairnet and later falls in love with Thorvald and goes with him to Valhalla. Voiced by Candi Milo.
- Thorvald the Red is a Viking who debuted in "Norse-ing Around". He thawed from inside of a giant ice pop Fanboy and Chum Chum had made in their freezer. In Norse-ing Around, Thorvald is consumed with the need to get to Valhalla, one of the Norse versions of heaven. Thorvald later appears in "Norse Code" where he loses his battle axe in the school and is forced to work for Lunch Lady Cram. Thorvald gets his battle axe back from her and carries them both off to Valhalla. He is named after the Norse god Thor and is voiced by Nolan North.
- The Global Warmer is an super-villain and archenemy of Man-Arctica who first appears in "Stan-Arctica" and then, "Man-Arctica the Ride". His name is a play on the term global warming. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Oz's Mom is a single mother committed to teaching her adult son that the only way to run a successful business is by selling. She is usually met with great resistance from Oz, even though she is in control of the comic shop's purse strings. She owns a goat called Mitzi. Voiced by Estelle Harris.
- Chimp Chomp is a Donkey Kong parody video game featuring a monkey who is trying to take an ape's bananas. The ape sits at the top of a palm tree and throws energy balls at the chimp. Chimp Chomp has spawned two movies within the series. The Chimp Chomp machine in the Frosty Mart tends to get destroyed by Fanboy and Chum Chum in most episodes it appears.
- Precious is Mr. Mufflin's class pig. Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
- Berry the Ice Monster is a small pink creature who lives inside the Frosty Freezy Freeze machine at the Frosty Mart. He creates Frosty Freezy Freeze with his ice breath. In "Berry Sick", he becomes ill and is unable to produce any more Frosty Freezy Freeze. Fanboy and Chum Chum kidnap him and pretend to be doctors attempting to cure him, when in actuality, they want to keep him so that they can drink unlimited Frosty Freezy Freeze. He is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson.
- The Ice Monster is a frighteningly large beast created from the combination of Frosty Freezy Freeze and Ice-Monster Bun Bun, a snack food. The Ice Monster debuted in the pilot episode from Random! Cartoons.
- Michael Johnson is a classmate of Fanboy and Chum Chum's. He is an obvious parody of and tribute to Michael Jackson, as Johnson wears leather pants and jacket similar to those worn by Michael Jackson in his "Thriller" video. Like Jackson, Johnson often makes high-pitched exclamations such as "Hee hee," "Shamoan," etc. He is often shown doing the moonwalk instead of walking. Voiced by Wyatt Cenac.
- Duke is a classmate of Fanboy and Chum Chum's. He is tall, wears a 5 on his shirt and has blonde hair. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Nancy Pancy Is a girl nerd in Mr Mufflin's class. She has glasses and short brown hair tied back with a bow. Voiced by Kari Wahlgren. In "Fanboy A'hoy!", she was voiced by Nika Futterman.
- Francine Is a brown-haired diva in Mr. Mufflin's class. Voiced by Candi Milo.
- Cher Leader Is a cheerleader (or a group of them) in Mr. Mufflin's class. Voiced by Kari Wahlgren in "Fanboy Stinks" and Candi Milo in all other appearances, and is seen wearing a green and white cheerleader uniform.
- Dr. Acula is a vampire plastic surgeon who gives Chum Chum a neck so vampire Fanboy can bite Chum Chum and turn him into a vampire too. In doing so, the boys can spend eternity as best friends. Dr. Acula is based on the Count Dracula archetype. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Ms. Olive Is a preschool teacher who appears in "Marsha Marsha Marsha". She also appears as a French teacher named Madame LaVache in "Excuse Me" with a French accent. She also reappeared in "Strings Attached" where she has a baby.
- Marsha was a sweet, successful student until Fanboy ruined her life by sneezing on her placement test, rendering it illegible. As a result, she received a failing grade, and was sentenced to repeat kindergarten. When Fanboy and Chum Chum encounter her in her debut episode "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha", she has gone nutty and attempts to kill Fanboy. She also made a cameo in "Freeze Tag". Marsha is taller than Fanboy, speaks with a lisp and wears her brown hair in pigtails. Voiced by Candi Milo.
- Cheech is a classmate in Mr. Muflin's classroom. He was the 1st one to mock Janitor Poopatine's name (this gag would later be carried over by Chum Chum). He is seen to wear a beret and a green shirt with overalls.
- Fanbot is a robotic version of Fanboy that appears in "I, Fanbot". In a hare-brained scheme to pass a standardized test, Fanboy installs his brain into Fanbot, instead of installing Fanbot's brain chip in Fanboy's own body. As a result, everyone fails the test. Everyone, including Mr. Mufflin, chase after Fanbot.
- Mechatech is a dancing, robotic action figure. Fanboy became obsessed with it and traded Chum Chum to Yo in exchange for her Mechatech. Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
- Monster in the Mist is a figment of Boog's imagination. After Boog plays Chimp Chomp for 2½ days straight, he sees Chum Chum sitting atop Fanboy's head, but his bleary eyes confuse the boys for a monster, which racks Boog with fear. Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Scampers is one of Yo's Yamaguchi digital cats. Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
- Yum Yum is a cycloptic bubble gum creature created by Fanboy and Chum Chum in "The Janitor Strikes Back". Voiced by John DiMaggio.
- Fanman is a superhero who appeared in the Random! Cartoons 8-minute short "Fanboy". His costume is the basis for Fanboy's original grey costume, however, in the actual series, Fanman is unreferenced, and Man-Arctica is the boys' hero. He was voiced by Scott Grimes.
- Sprinkles is the class bear. Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
- Muk Muk is a female, semi-feral cousin of Chum Chum. Her appearance resembles Chum Chum's, though she sports pigtails and a dress. She hails from the wealthy city of West Apetown. Muk Muk tends to leap around constantly, which makes corralling her quite difficult for Chum Chum. She loves to eat and she favors guttural sounds over speech. Contrary to what some fans have assumed, her name is not "Chum Chum" spelled backwards.[6][dead link ] Voiced by Nika Futterman.
- Crabulous: Destroyer of Worlds is an action figure who is a crab in "The Hard Sell". He has an exercise video "Crabulous: Destroyer of Flab". Voiced by Jeff Bennett.
- Moppy A mop that Fanboy assembled as a date for his school dance in "Moppy Dearest". While she appears to only be a dolled-up mop in a rolling bucket, some of the other characters acknowledge her personality. Yo, Lupe and Francine, for example, treat her with kindness. Janitor Poopatine also seems to admire her, much to Brenda's disappointment.
- Agent 8 Is a dangerous collectible octopus toy which Oz owned. Its ink is very acidic. It shocked Fanboy and Chum Chum many times and once almost blew them up.
- The Burgle Brats Three kindergartners with a propensity for crime. In "The Great Bicycle Mystery", they blackmailed Boog to steal Lenny's bike to get back his hat.
Locations
- The Fanlair is Fanboy and Chum Chum's water tower home. It is located above a nondescript apartment building in the heart of Galaxy Hills. When the boys are not out in the world enjoying life, they're enjoying life at home in the Fanlair.
- Kyle's Apartment is Kyle's supernatural refuge from the subnatural indignity of public school. Kyle lives here with Necronomicon and Scrivener Elf. Fanboy and Chum Chum occasionally sneak into Kyle's apartment through the mail slot in the door.
- Oz Comix is Oz's private comic book library and collectibles museum disguised as a normal comic book store. Customers are treated as trespassers, for Oz refuses to part with any of his inventory, to the profound chagrin of his mother, who only wants the very best for him... and a yogurt shop.
- Galaxy Hills Elementary School is the elementary school that the characters attend, located at the end of Fanboy's street.
- Galaxy Hills Theater is the town's movie theater, located at the end of the street, on the curb across from the school.
- The Frosty Mart is Fanboy and Chum Chum's favorite conveniently located convenience store hangout. A mere hop across the street from the Fanlair, this home-away-from home is run by the dispassionate assistant manager Lenny Flynn-Boyle and his totally unreliable employee Boog. The Frosty Mart houses the infamous Frosty Freezy Freeze machine, a device that produces the most perfect brain-freezing refreshment in the universe, the Frosty Freezy Freeze! In the pilot from Random! Cartoons, the Frosty Mart was called the "Super Mart".
Reception and achievements
Reviews
Critical reception was generally mixed. Aaron H. Bynum of Animation Insider called Fanboy and Chum Chum "a fun show that deserves a good look. The quality animation helps counterbalance the immense amount of dialogue from the series' chatty characters, and the sheer comedy of marginally competent comic-loving kids helps outweigh what might otherwise be a binge of geeky annoyance. But overall, Fanboy and Chum Chum is a lot of fun."[7] Variety praised the series' "bright, energetic look and even an appealing premise in theory".[8] David Hinckley of NY Daily News gave the series three stars out of five, and said that "it's good [but] might not be the next SpongeBob".[9]
A negative review came from KJ Dell'Antonia of Slate, who found the main characters irritating, and thought the whole concept was unoriginal, with "many tired jokes and not enough of that kind of mild satire to make this play in our house".[10]
