Bodega Catena Zapata is a family-owned winery credited with putting Argentinean wines and high altitude Malbec on the world map. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

History

Nicola Catena arrived in Mendoza, Argentina from the Marche region of Italy in 1898, and planted his first Malbec vineyard in 1902. His son Domingo then grew the business until the Catena family became one of the largest vineyard holders in Mendoza. [6]

The business was transformed by Domingo’s son, Nicolás Catena,[7] a graduate of Universidad Nacional de Cuyo and Columbia University, who holds a doctorate degree in economics. In 1982 he came to the United States as a visiting professor at University of California, Berkeley, and during his time in the San Francisco Bay Area was inspired by California wines. [6]

Upon returning to his home country, he introduced modern European winemaking and viticultural techniques to Argentina, including small French oak barrels, drip irrigation and low yielding French Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings, extremely low yields and plant-by-plant selection. [6] [8] He developed Argentina’s first patented selection of Argentine Malbec clones - the Catena cuttings - [9] and dedicated himself to studying Mendoza's high altitude vine growing conditions. For his pioneering work and vision to elevate the stature of Argentine wine worldwide, Nicolás Catena has received numerous awards [3] [10][8] and has been compared to the likes of Angelo Gaja and Robert Mondavi. [1] [2] [13] [6]

The winery's breakthrough wine was the Nicolás Catena Zapata 1997. It was introduced in 2000 through as series of blind tasting conducted in London and several cities around the United States where it was compared to first growths and other notable wines from around the world. The Nicolás Catena Zapata came in first and second in every tasting. [14] In 2006, the Nicolás Catena Zapata 2004 became the first Argentine wine to receive over 98 points from Parker's The Wine Advocate. [15]

Fourth generation vintner Laura Catena, a Harvard and Stanford educated physician, is current General Manager of Bodega Catena Zapata. She is the author of Vino Argentino, An Insiders Guide to the Wines and Wine Country of Argentina, published by Chronicle Books [6] [16] [17] which has been reviewed by The New York Times magazine, Washington Post, Wine Spectator and Oprah Magazine among others. The Winery

Bodega Catena Zapata’s winery is located in Mendoza, in the sub appellation of Agrelo. The winery structure, which recalls a pyramid, is distinguished by its striking design, based on Mayan architecture and meant to evoke the unique New World terroir of Mendoza. [6] [13] [22]

Bodega Catena Zapata exports three lines of wine:

  1. Catena Zapata - a plant by plant selection of the winery's Estate vineyards.
    1. Nicolás Catena Zapata – the winery’s Icon wine – a blend of selected plants of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and in some vintages Petit Verdot from the La Pirámide and Adrianna Vineyards. [23]
    2. Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino – a blend of selected Malbec plants from the Adrianna and Nicasia Vineyards [24]
    3. Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard Malbec - a plant by plant selection from Mendoza’s highest Malbec vineyard at almost 5,000 feet elevation. [6] [25]
    4. Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard Malbec - a plant by plant selection of Malbec from the Catena family’s vineyard in Altamira. [26]
