History
By the beginning of the 1980s, more and more women from culturally diverse backgrounds were pursuing college degrees. The five Founding Mothers decided to create a support system for these women, a student organization that celebrates diversity and fosters progress. These five women founded Mu Sigma Upsilon, with the intent to unify women while observing their differences.
On November 21, 1981 at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, Mu Sigma Upsilon became the first Multicultural Greek Letter Organization, celebrating culture for almost 25 years. The founders were five women determined to establish an organization that brought together all women. It was their limitless vision that enabled these determined women to break down the barriers and build the bridges that connected women from all different parts of the world. Hence, our motto "Mujeres Siempre Unidas," or "Women Always United.
A quarter of a century since its inception, MSU has grown to a membership of over 500 women with recognized chapters in 7 states across the country. And although the 21st century poses different challenges for college women, one thing remains the same – Mu Sigma Upsilon is still a home away from home for all its sisters.
Goals
- Academic Excellence
- We belive that with the knowledge gained through a higher education, we as women can succeed in our future endeavors. Within each chapter is a system to ensure academic excellence amongst our sisters and interested ladies. With study groups and academic workshops we are dedicated to maintaining the higest standards of academics.
- Unity Amongst All Women
- Through unity there is strength, through strength there is power, and with power, we as women can overcome any obstacle. With annual retreats, conventions and banquets we strive to strenghten our bonds as women and sisters. We reach out to all women with forums relevant to our needs in today's society with forums on all topics including health, professionalism and relationships.
- To Be Active In The University And Community
- We are all extensions of the communities in which we were raised. In giving back to them we are ensuring progressive growth and improvement for future genertaions. MSU provides services through formal or informal partnerships with local nonprofit and community-based organizations, as designed to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to community needs such as health care, child care, literacy training, education (including tutuorial services), welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community improvement, students with disabilities, etc.
Family and Traditions
Family- Lambda Sigma Upsilon
Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Incorporated shares a rich history and an unprecedented working relationship with the brothers of Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity Inc.
Although each organization’s cultural composite is unique and we are distinctly separate governing bodies and organizations that function independently of each other; we work together and thus form the Upsilon Family. The Upsilon Family is about unity amongst sisters and brothers that share similar goals to enrich their surrounding academic and neighboring communities with service and cultural enrichment.
Tradition- Stepping
Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. was founded as a stepping organization, which means it is part of our history and traditions, and at one point in time every sister of MSU has learned and performed in a step show. Our national and chapter step teams participate in exhibitions and consistently place in step competitions.
