Breakdance is the commercial name of the dance called Bboying.It is the name popularised by the news media. Most people have not heard of Bboying however it is becoming more popular due to shows such as So you think you can dance and America's Best Dance Crew.Break is a shortened description of the style of dance. Originally it was a reference to the break in the music as detailed in Bboy article. However now it is more a description of the the style of dance. As in he can Break, or can you break and pop and lock. So bboy's are breakers and can break but do not call themselves breakdancers.It is confusing to outsiders.Because there are two things at work here one is the cultural element and the other is a commercial element.So people who do breakdancing are not necessarily bboys.But all bboys can do breakdancing. I can liken it to a person who does latin dancing is not automatically a latin american.So if you do irish dancing it does not automatically make you irish.But if you bboy then you can break as well as understand and follow the culture.A Breakdancer may be able to do the dance moves but that doesn't make them culturally a bboy unless you also follow the cultural norms associated with the culture.So if you do the dance but do not follow the culture you are viewed as in some circles as a culture vulture. Which is why Bboys do not like being described as breakdancers it carrying a negative connotation. Breakdancing is the style of dance. Breakdance encompasses the freeflowing form utilising all of the body. This is in contrast to most traditional dances that use the feet primarily to dance. Breakdancing encourages the use of hands elbows fists,head,back,shoulders,butt,knees,legs,back of hand or wrist,belly to contact the ground and spin pivot rotate hop step and dance. Thus Breakdance embraces a larger ground contact area of the body for dance..Breakdance is generally comprised of 4 major parts. The intro known as Toprock.Then the Drop which is the transition from standing to on the ground. The next is Footwork which involves the hand touching the ground. Also various moves.The freeze is the finishing move. It is a pose or held position to let others know you have ended and serves as a means to throw out a challenge.
