Oulton Broad is a fresh water lake that is apart of Lowestoft, Suffolk in the United Kingdom. Lowestoft is at the mouth of River Waveney and forms part of the Suffolk Broads. It is an expanse of marsh land that is remnant of medieval peat cutting. Lake Lothing is connected by Lowestoft Swing Bridge, Mutford Lift Bridge and Lock Bridge. There are two railway stations; Lowestoft South which goes to Ipswich and Lowestoft North which goes to Norwich.[1]
History
Lowestoft is a built up residential area, with large detached houses and flats, they have lake frontage being quiet and natural, makeing it most expensive area. The lake can be reached on foot by walking through public footpaths and field across White Cast Marshes, an important nature conservation area.[2]
Traditions
Lowestoft is a busy tourist destination on The Sunrise Coast with holiday chalets and marina that it is used as water sports centre that includes; jet sking, kayaking, wind surfing, coneing, kite boarding, yachting, power boating and as a base for day boat hireing. Bridge Road is main Shopping Street.[3]
Notable People
George Borrow writer and author, moved to Lowestoft in 1840 and wrote some of his books.[4] He left Lowestoft in 1850s however; returned in 1874 till his death in 1881. The "George Borrow Hotel" is named after him.[5]
Sir Nicholas Everitt, nobleman and estate owner, who lived in Lowestoft during 1800s. He gave his estate to the public. A little stone monument stands on the quayside in his memory. "Nicholas Everitt Park" is named after him. Lowestoft Museum is in the park and holds a collection of Lowestoft Porcelain and other artefacts.[6][7]
