A Powerplay is a rule introduced in 1991 concerning fielding restrictions in One Day International (ODI) cricket.

The Powerplay was intended to add to the excitement in ODI cricket. If the batting team has got off to a very quick start, the fielding captain can choose to delay their Fielding Powerplay. However, the batting team can take their Batting Powerplay at any instant of the match. The captain of the team has to intimate the umpire about taking the Batting Powerplay prior to the bowler starting his run up before delivering a ball. However if a team fails to take their Batting Powerplay till the 45th over it would come into effect automatically.

Batting Powerplay

This type of powerplay is used usually in the ending overs. This powerplay alows three player to stand outside the circle. The powerplay is signaled by making a round with the hand & then tapping the right hand to the left hand. The powerplay is allowed up to 5 Overs in a ODI match
