TheNational Institute Of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) (Hindi: राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, सिल्चर) , an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar Assam , India. In year 2002, it was upgraded to the status of an NIT from a Regional Engineering College(REC)in the year 2002. It is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 670 acres of land on the outskirts of Silchar amid breathtaking scenery. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and hillocks.

In surveys by magazines like Outlook and India Today, the institute ranks amongst the top 35 technical universities of India. The institute scores high in parameters such as placements, infrastructure and academic environment [1].

Location

The Institute is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8 kilometers from the southern outskirts of Silchar city. Buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis can be hired from the city centre to reach the institute. Silchar is situated at 92.52 degrees East longitude and 24.6 degrees North latitude and at a height of 114.69 meters above sea level.

History

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru sought to develop India as a world leader in Science and Technology. To achieve this, several IITs and NITs (Erstwhile RECs) were established in different parts of the country. Regional Engineering College at Silchar was founded in 1967 as a co-operative venture between the Government of India and the Government of Assam to cater to the country's need for manpower in technology. RECs were jointly operated by the central government and the concerned state government. Non-recurring expenditures and expenditures for post-graduate courses during the REC period were borne by the central government, while recurring expenditure on undergraduate courses was shared equally by central and state governments. The college was conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. In 2002, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and was renamed National Institute of Technology, Silchar. . In 2007, through NIT Bill, the Indian government declared these schools as Institute of National Importance at par with the Indian Institutes of Technology.

The educational strategy of NIT Silchar takes a cosmopolitan approach towards educating youth. It aims at promoting tself as a premier Institute for technical education in India and expresses its policies in the following words: Education, Technical, Confluence, Cosmopolitan and National. These five themes are reflected in the logo National Institute of Technology, Silchar. The outer ring in the logo is a simplified form of a rope stands for strength and confluence. The knots of the ropes have transformed into seven leaves, denoting the seven North-Eastern states which NIT Silchar represents. The leaves surround a gear inside which is the icon for technical education. Its forward rotation signifies continuous growth and improvement. The central ring is the axis and basis of all development. The logo is painted in two colors: Red and Blue. These two colors are the basic colors and have a cosmopolitan look. Beside being the colors of opposite contrast, these create a sense of dynamism and vibrancy. These colors also give a sense of authority and officialism to the logo.

Placements

Established in 1967, NIT Silchar is recognized nationwide as one of the leaders in the fields of engineering and research. Its mission is to create an ambiance in which new ideas and creativity flourish in abundance. Culture and student life

Societies

NIT Silchar has always striven to encourage an equitable balance between academics and extracurricular engagements among its students. The intention is to create future leaders in chosen fields and not just technically accomplished individuals. Inorder to promote this, various societies have been encouraged under various departments and technical organizations.[7]

These are some of the student organizations on-campus:

Student Union Body

As with all Educational institutions in India, NIT Silchar has a student’s body which takes the initiative of organising various activities for the students all year long. The Student’s Gymkhana [8] comprises of student members who head various posts and take the responsibility of the student’s welfare and extra-curricular activities in the college .The members of the Gymkhana are final year students who are selected for the different offices by teachers after several rounds of interviews based on their leadership and management skills. Headed by the Vice-President, the Gymkhana consists of the General Secretary, Cultural Secretary ,Literary Secretary, General Secretary(Sports) and the Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Indoor games and Gymnasium Secretaries. The Gymkhana works under the able guidance of the Dean Students Affairs and the Faculty Advisors to the offices. These student leaders are responsible for coordinating different events for the all rounded personality development of the students. The Gymkhana takes the initiative for organizing the college festival “Incandescence”(Annual Cultural fest)[9] & "Tecnoesis"(Annual Tech fest) , publishing the annual college magazine “IGNITS” and monthly paper "NITSPEAK" , organizing the annual sporting events as well as various literary events such as debates and quizzes. These events ensure that the students of the college get ample opportunities to develop the skills required to succeed in today’s competitive world. It is due to the efforts of the Gymkhana that the engineering students of today go on to become successful in the corporate world tomorrow.

The institute is a confluence of various cultures and ethnicities. Students from every nook and corner of the country live together within one campus, fostering a sense of unity and cultural exchange. In addition, NIT Silchar is situated amidst beautiful and lush green surroundings dotted with fresh water lakes and gleaming streams and rivers. The beauty of nature commingled with perfection of human mind makes one wonder on the harmony it fosters. Despite its location at the far flung remote side of Assam, the place never deprives one of experiencing its unique charm and lurking natural beauty. Students enjoy enough facilities inside the campus to pass their leisure hours. The campus life here vividly reflects the unity in diversity of this great nation.

The institute recognizes the extracurricular activities as a part to students’ life and hence well-equipped facilities for games and sports are provided within the hostels premises, in other general locations and in the student activity center. Hostels are equipped with most of the indoor games facilitates. The student activity center is used as an indoor stadium. A well laid fenced playing ground is used for outdoor games and tracking events. Regular events like inter-hostel tournaments in various games took place during the year under review as well. Besides this, students participated in competitions organized on the occasions of Republic Day, Independence Day, etc. Various quizzes, debates and technical competitions are held under the banner of various societies. NITS also organizes annual technical and cultural festivals respectively called the Technoesis and Incandescence where students enhance their technical as well as cultural skills.

Admissions

Students are taken in for the undergraduate courses through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by CBSE[10], New Delhi. More one million students wrote this test in 2011 to gain admission to one of 20 NITs. This makes it one of the largest such examinations in the world. Admission to some other autonomous national level technical institutes (called Deemed University) is also through AIEEE.

Admission to the graduate M.Tech and PhD courses are primarily based on scores in the GATE exam, conducted by the IITs. Faculty from other institutes work as research scholars in NITC under the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP). It is the national coordination centre for the QIP of polytechnic institutes.

Administration

Under the constitution of the National Institutes of Technology Act 2007, the President of India is the Visitor to the institute. The authorities of the institute are Board of Governors and the Senate. The Board is headed by the Chairman, who is appointed by the Visitor.
