The eighth season of the American television comedy The Office is scheduled to premiere on September 22, 2011 on NBC.[1] The series will air on Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. as part of Comedy Night Done Right.[2] This is the first season without Steve Carell as Michael Scott in the lead role.

Production

The series was renewed for an eighth season on March 17, 2011.[3] Executive producer and writer/actor B. J. Novak previously renewed his contract with Universal Media Studios through the eighth season.[4] Also, writer/actress Mindy Kaling will be returning as an actress, but it is unknown if she will return as a writer for the series.[5] Season 8 will also feature new characters, including Stanley's other daughter and a new male addition to the accounting department.[6] Cody Horn, who guest starred last season as Jordan Garfield has been confirmed to not be returning.[7] Reprising his guest starring role of Robert California, James Spader is joining the regular cast to replace Kathy Bates's character as the CEO of Sabre;[8] Spader will appear in at least 15 episodes.[7] Jenna Fischer's real life pregnancy will be written into the show, and Pam will again be pregnant at the start of the season.[9] In an interview, executive producer Paul Lieberstein stated that with the departure of Michael Scott, the writers will explore further into the other characters on the show, such as centering on a specific character for an episode.[10] Stephen Collins, Dee Wallace and Josh Groban have been cast as Andy's father, mother and brother, respectively, and will appear in an episode that will air in October 2011.[11][12]

The season began filming on July 25, 2011.[13]
