Gleeden is a dating website which specialises in extramarital dating.
History
Gleeden was created by an American company, Blackdivine. A pre-launch of the site was organized between September and December 2009, operating on premise that users of dating sites are not always truthful about their marital statuses. Since its launch, the site has over 915,000 members.[1]
Community
Gleeden primarily caters to married men and women, however, the website equally welcomes single people into the community. The members are often between the ages of 25 and 45 years old, and one in ten members come to the site to pursue a homosexual or bisexual encounter [citation needed].
Signing up and payment
Gleeden is free for women. Men purchase “credits” that run according to the activity: communicate with other members, receive or sending messages, or chat.
Members get in contact with each other via chat, or through private messages, in which email address and phone number can be swapped. The site also allows members to send each other virtual gifts, to seduce the other members.
Critics
The website is accused of encouraging adultery. The criticism is tied to the explicit nature of the site's dating platform, which welcomes extramarital affairs. Providing a dating platform to married men and women is not to the taste of everyone, and Gleeden’s founders are regularly accused of destroying marriages. Their spokesperson defends the site, stating that the site only offers networking, and that they provide no real incentive for their members to pursue affairs, nor do they believe that any site can ‘promote adultery’. The site is condemned by religious groups and authorities.
International
The exchanges are international; the website is present in 159 countries. The interface has been translated into 5 different languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) and the site’s moderators operate in all languages. In May 2010, the site was launched in Australia and New Zealand.
