Natassia Gail Zolot[2] (born September 24, 1989), better known by her stage name Kreayshawn, is an American rapper, editor, and director.

Early life

Kreayshawn was born in San Francisco, California and grew up in East Oakland, California. She’s a third-generation Russian-American,[3] and the daughter of Elka Zolot, a former member of the San Francisco garage punk band The Trashwomen.[4] She has directed numerous underground music videos,[5] and attended Berkeley Digital Film Institute[6][7] with a full scholarship[8] until she dropped out after a year.[9]

Career

Kreayshawn performs as part of the White Girl Mob, consisting of herself and two friends whom she refers to as her sisters: V-Nasty,[10] and DJ Lil' Debbie.[11] She released her first mixtape, Kittys x Choppas in 2010,[12] and began to generate buzz after releasing her first music video for the single "Bumpin Bumpin" in August 2010. However, it wasn't until after she released the video for "Gucci Gucci" on May 16, 2011 that she began to receive mainstream attention. After generating nearly three million YouTube views in the first three weeks, Kreayshawn was quickly signed to Columbia Records. Kreayshawn directed a music video for "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie", the first single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' album, I'm with You.[6] The band's label contacted her management about directing the video.[13] However, the band later opted to re-shoot the video and did not go with Kreayshawn's version.[14] She hosted the Red Carpet before the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards,[15][16] and she was also nominated for Best New Artist.

Controversies

Critics of Kreayshawn's music cite cultural appropriation and "exploitation of black culture".[17] West Coast rapper, Game, released a diss track "Uncle Otis" where he criticized Kreayshawn for her alleged use of the n-word.[18] Kreayshawn sparked more controversy when during a televised freestyle, she insulted Rick Ross, calling him fake. She later retracted her statements and described it as a "misunderstanding".[19] However, a few days later, on UStream, she began making fun of Ross again, calling him fake, teasing him for his weight, and saying he cannot rap.[20] These negative remarks eventually led to an altercation[21] between Kreayshawn's manager Stretch and Rick Ross's camp during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. The same night, while Kreayshawn was at the awards her Twitter account was hacked by an anonymous hacktivist group. They leaked nude photos of Kreayshawn[22] which she claimed were taken when she was underage.[23] Shortly after the incident she posted the following on her Tumblr account:

"All I wanted to do is create and have a good time. But, this is quickly forming into something I never would have signed up for from being accused of being racist to getting my pre-teen nudes leaked everywhere. I feel like this shit ain’t my cup of tea. Someone else want my job right about now? Im just gotta sip lean and disappear. THIS GAME IS FAKE AS ALL HELL!"[24]
