Template:Infobox Australian University University of Hyderabad is a premier institute of post-graduate teaching and research, established by an Act of the Parliament of India in 1974 as a Central University. Over the years, University of Hyderabad has emerged as a top ranking institute of higher education and research in India.


General Information

The "objects of the University" as envisaged in the Act are :"to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and by the example of its corporate life, and in particular to make special provisions for integrated courses in humanities and science in the educational programmes of the University and to take appropriate measures for promoting inter-disciplinary studies and research in the University."

With the view to increase opportunities for higher education to a wider section of our people, the University has introduced five specialized post-graduate programmes under Distance Education . These courses are in the areas of Computer Science, Project Planning & Management, Environment Studies, Translation Studies and Human Rights. The admission announcement for these courses is normally released in leading dailies in October every year. For further enquiries, the office of the Distance Education may be contacted.

The University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and International Council for Distance Education.

An Academic Staff College has been functioning on the University campus since 1988 under the UGC scheme for improving the standards of teaching in colleges and universities as part of the New Education Policy (1986). The College organizes orientation and refresher courses for college and university teachers.

Campus

The University is located about 20 km from the city of Hyderabad on the old Hyderabad-Bombay highway. Stretching over nearly 2300 acres of land, the sprawling, scenic, serene campus is the home of a variety of birds. The University also has a city campus - The Golden Threshold - the residence of the late Sarojini Naidu.

The Sarojini Naidu School is located at the Golden Threshold premises and all other Schools of the University are located on the main campus in Gachibowli. A Centre for Folk Culture Studies established with financial support from the Ford Foundation also functions from the Golden Threshold under the aegis of the S.N.School.
