Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey is a novel by Chuck Palahniuk released on May 1, 2007.[1]
Rant is told in the form of an oral biography. When the story begins, the reader discovers that the main character, Buster Landru "Rant" Casey, is already deceased. Throughout the book various people discuss their memories of Buster and the world he lived in, presenting stories in an occasionally conflicting timeline.
The paperback edition became a national bestseller in May 2008 and remained on the New York Times Paperback Fiction Bestseller List for six weeks.[2]
Real-life author Victor Turner is briefly quoted as one of the contributors.
Future
Palahniuk has indicated that Rant is the first in what will become a three-book series.[3]
Real Life Rant Casey
Rant Casey's character is loosely based on the son of a family friend Chloe Lucero(born David DeNorch 1982), son of Dan DeNorch. Dan is a long-time family friend of Chuck Palahniuk and contributed the idea for the brain cord. Chuck was seeking ideas for writing based on Chloe's multiple jobs as a telephone operator: some of which have been told at Chuck's readings and distributed on CD as a fan gift. Chloe began asking over dinner at Lewis & Clark Restaurant in NW Portland about compensation and when Chuck declined Chloe began ranting at Chuck finishing by saying "Sorry but I don't want to be exploited." where Chuck responded "Get used to it!!".
Thus the inspiration for the format of interviewing others about Rant, instead of getting the story straight from him/her.
Chloe Lucero in real life was active in the Liberation Collective and Reclaim the Streets, as well as Cascadia Forest Alliance, in the 1990's as well as an anti-curfew organization known as K.I.D.S. and other underground art/political organizations (Martial Art studio-Riot Cop & HIVE, Previously Owen and Vinka's finishing school; where he served as a naked house boy.)
Chloe is currently working on a novel on the Death of the American Dream, an epilogue to the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, chronicling the Further adventures of the Pranksters with generous assistance from Ken Babbs. Having briefly lived with and partied with many Pranksters. Coincidently the Pranksters have been working on their own Time-Travel theories involving LSD and Einsteins theory of relativity.
