Rabindra Bharati University is a university in Kolkata, India. It was founded on May 8, 1962, under the Rabindra Bharati Act of the Government of West Bengal in 1961, to mark the birth centenary of the poet Rabindranath Tagore. It is located at the Tagore family home, Jorasanko Thakur Bari.
The university offers undergraduate ad postgraduate programs in Performing Arts under the Faculty of Fine Arts, Visual Arts under the Faculty with same name, Humanities, Social Sciences and other subjects under the Faculty of Arts.
History
At the university's founding in 1962, it occupied the former home of Rabindranath Tagore. While two of the three faculties of the University, those of Fine Arts and Visual Arts, are still located there, when the Faculty of Arts was founded in 1976, it was located on a new campus at 56A, B. T. Road, Kolkata-50. The new campus was on the grounds of the "Emerald Bower," a mansion built by Harakumar Tagore, the poet's uncle. The mansion and its parklands, later acquired by the Government of West Bengal, became a complex of academic institutions among which this University has the central and larger share. The main administrative office is also situated at the Emerald Bower Campus.
The university was reconstituted in 1981 by the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981.

Staff killed by students
In July 2011, staff member Basudeb Nandy died after he was punched up by students. He had protested the inappropriate parking of some motorcycles.
When employees protested the death of Nandi, assistant professor of the Visual Arts department Surajit Chanda allegedly brandished a revolver to threaten them. Chanda and five students were arrested, and education minister Bratya Basu visited the campus to release tensions[1]. Basudeb Nandy was died due to cardiac attack. It is normal death according to Post- Mortom Report. None of the Student and assistant professor of the Visual Arts department Surojit Chanda involved in the scuffle between them and Nandi. The honorable Calcutta High division bench released on bail Chanda based on the Post- Mortom Report. The acquisition of revolver is false! The police authority did not get any kind of arms( No seizure -list) . The Post- Mortom Report also did not indicate any External wounds in the body. It is a conspiracy against the University and Faculty of Visual Arts as well as Professor Chanda.
