Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University is a government financed public university of Bangladesh. This is the Largest University of the North Bengal at Rangpur division.

History

HSTU Shaheed Meener

Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University was established as an Agricultural Extension Training Institute (AETI) to award a three years diploma in agriculture. The AETI was later upgraded to Hajee Mohammad Danesh Agricultural College in 1988 having an affiliation from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Then the college was upgraded to the status of a university renaming it as Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University in 8 April 2002.

Danesh, (Hajee) Mohammad (1900-1986) peasant leader and politician. He was born at village Sultanpur in Dinajpur district in 1900 AD. Having obtained his M.A in History from Aligarh Muslim University in 1931 and B.L degree in 1932 Haji Danesh joined the Dinajpur district bar.

In 1938, Hajee Danesh made himself associated with the Krishak Samiti, a front organisation of the Bengal Provincial Communist Party, and began organising peasant movement in northern Bengal. peasant movement against the realisation of tolls and demanding abolition of zamindari system was organised by him in Dinajpur district when he was arrested and kept confined. Hajee Danesh was one of the organisers of the Bengal Peasant Convention held at Domar in Nilphamari district in 1942.

Soon after the closing of the convention he was arrested and had to sustain long imprisonment. He organised the tebhaga movement in northern Bengal to realise the demands of the barga peasants.

Hajee Danesh joined the muslim league in 1945, but was expelled from the party in 1946 on ground of his continuing leadership to the Tebhaga Movement. The same year he was arrested by the Bengal government and was, however, released in 1947. Thereafter he joined Dinajpur Surendranath College as Professor of History.

Hajee Danesh floated a new political party, the Ganatantri Dal, in 1952 and was elected its president. The party joined the united front in December 1953, and Hajee Danesh was elected member of the East Bengal Legislative Assembly from Dinajpur district in 1954 as a nominee of the United Front. After the promulgation of 92A by the central government and the dismissal of the United Front cabinet in East Bengal Hajee Danesh was arrested. He was released in 1956. In 1957, he abolished the Ganatantri Dal only to join the newly floated National Awami Party under the leadership of Maulana abdul hamid khan bhasani, and was elected its vice president. With the promulgation of Martial Law in the country in 1958 Haji Danesh was arrested. He was elected general secretary of the East Pakistan unit of the National Awami Party in 1964 and vice president of the central committee in 1965. Hajee Danesh politically opposed the six-point programme of Bangabandhu sheikh mujibur rahman. He resigned from the National Awami Party in 1971. In 1971, he worked in favour of the war of liberation at Mujibnagar.

Hajee Danesh floated a new political party, Jatiya Gana-mukti Union, in December 1973. In February 1975, he joined the bangladesh krishak sramik awami league (BAKSAL) and was made a member of its central committee. After the fall of BAKSAL government he revived the Jatiya Gana-mukti Union in 1976 under the Political Parties Regulations promulgated by the martial law government. But in 1980, Hajee Danesh abolished this party, and floated a new political party styled as Ganatantrik Party, and himself became its president. This party was amalgamated with the jatiya party of General hussain muhammad ershad in 1986. Hajee Danesh was appointed chief adviser to the Jatiya Krishak Party, a front organisation of Jatiya Party. He died in Dhaka on 28 June 1986.

Halls of residence

A dormitory is called a "hall" here. Students admitted to the Faculties have either to reside in or be attached to a hall of residence. The university has 4 halls of residence and 3 for male students and 1 Hall for female students. Hall are headed by a Provost who is assisted by House Tutors and Assistant House Tutors. The administration of a hostel is controlled by a Warden and Assistant Warden .

Library

The University Library, housed in One building . The library holds a collection of more than 30,000 volumes, including bound volumes of periodicals.It subscribes to over 50 foreign journals. A complete automation of the system is in the process. The Confined Section of the Library building contains numerous rare books.

The University Medical Centre

The Medical Centre of the HSTU, located near the Library , offers free medical service to students, teachers, staff and family members of the teachers and staff. The Centre provides service round-the-clock, seven-days-a-week, with 4 doctors with Ambulance Facility. The Centre has arrangement for 10 bed accommodation so that patients suffering from contagious diseases may be cared for in isolation.

Student Counseling and Guidance

The Students Counseling and Guidance Service is an integral part of the academic programmes of students of the teaching departments and institutes. It aims at helping students to adjust to campus life, effectively pursue curricular as well as co-curricular activities, develop their abilities for making wise choices and plans, and solve individual problems through counseling.

The University organizes sports and other extracurricular and recreational activities And provides Intramural and Extramural programmes.

The Directorate organizes and conducts interdepartment and inter-hall tournaments, individual hall athletics, University athletics, and inter-university games and sports. Students participate in national championships in different games and sports for which training and coaching are offered.
