We Are the Ocean are a 5 piece alternative rock band from Loughton, Essex, England. The band has played hundreds of shows since their formation, including several festivals during 2008 such as Slam Dunk, Offset Festival, Middlesbrough Music Live, and Taste of Chaos. They have supported bands such as You Me at Six, The Used, The Blackout, Fightstar, Funeral for a Friend, Underoath, Lostprophets and My American Heart, as well as playing alongside Kids in Glass Houses, From First to Last, The Medic Droid, Brigade, Saving Aimee, Tonight Is Goodbye and Furthest Drive Home. They embarked on a 24 day show headline tour in January and February 2009, selling out most venues. The band released their second album Go Now And Live on 25 April 2011.
History
Formation and self-titled debut EP (2007–2008)
The band was originally called "Dead But Still Dreaming" with Dan Brown, Jack Spence and three others. After a while the band broke apart, but Dan and Jack carried on searching for new members during this time. They had formed a full line-up again by 2007 with Liam Cromby, Rickie Bloom and Tom Whittaker, and still under the original name of Dead But Still Dreaming. After a while, Bloom left the band and was eventually replaced by Alfie Scully. Shortly after the creation of this solid line-up, the band decided on a new start with the name We Are The Ocean.
The band quickly shot to prominence thanks mainly to MySpace and were nominated for Kerrang! Best British Newcomer and voted K! Readers Poll 2nd best unsigned UK band. They released their debut EP entitled We Are the Ocean in 2008, selling 1000 limited edition copies in 1 day.
Cutting Our Teeth and subsequent touring (2008-2010)
We Are the Ocean have an extensive tour history, having toured all over the UK, Europe, the US and Australia. They have played countless festivals, including Download Festival, Moshpit Open Festival, Slam Dunk Festival, and are one of few UK bands invited to play Bamboozle festival in New Jersey, USA, one of the largest alternative/punk festivals in the world.[1]
We Are the Ocean started writing material for their debut album around December 2008. The album was produced by Brian McTernan (Thrice, The Bled, Converge) at Salad Days Studio in Baltimore, USA. They were originally aiming for a Summer 2009 release but for unknown reasons the album was pushed back to November,[2] then pushed back again to 25 January 2010, and finally pushed back to 1 February 2010.[3][4]
We Are the Ocean toured with The Amity Affliction on their Stairway to Hell Australian Tour in October 2009. In late September they released a new song entitled "These Days, I Have Nothing". On 19 October 2009, the band signed to Hassle Records,[4][5] and also announced their sophomore EP, Look Alive, which was released 16 November 2009.[3] The debut album, Cutting Our Teeth was released on 1 February 2010, on Hassle Records as well.
The band re-released Cutting Our Teeth in October 2010 as a deluxe edition with a second disc, featuring the highly sought limited edition EP, and four unheard tracks. The re-release has received positive feedback from critics.[6]
Go Now and Live (2011–present)
We Are the Ocean recorded their second album, titled Go Now and Live, with Pete Miles (The King Blues, Canterbury).[7] On 4 January 2011, the band released "What It Feels Like", the first single off their second album, which is due for release on 25 April 2011. The video, which was released on 8 February 2011, received heavy rotation on UK Rock Music Station Scuzz TV.[8]
On 21 March 2011, the music video for the second single off the album, "The Waiting Room", was released, although the official single was only released on 18 April 2011.
