Education in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's population is highly educated with a literacy rate of 92.3%. This has been mainly due to the free education system in Sri Lanka.
History
Sri Lanka has many boys and girls schools. Many has been created during the colonial period by the British. One of the famous schools created during the colonial era is Royal College. There many other schools that have a colonial history such as Trinity College, Kandy in Kandy, St. Thomas in Mount Lavinia.
In 1938, the education system in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) was made free under the Universal Franchise granted in 1931. Due to this, the goverment established Maha Vidyalaya's. These were scattered around the island to provide education. The medium provided was either Sinahalese or Tamil.
Structure
Sri Lanka's education structure is divided into three parts: primary, junior secondary and senior secondary. Primary education lasts six years and at the end of this period, the students write an exam. This exam allows students with exceptional skills to move on to better schools. After primary education, the junior secondary education lasts for 5 years. After this period, the students does a G.C.E ordaninary level. The students must pass this examination to go on to Senior secondary. Senior secondary education lasts for 2 years. At the end of this, there is another examination called G.C.E advanced level.
University
University education is also free. There are technical colleges which specializes in mechanical and electronic subjects.
