Indian School Sohar is an english medium,co- educational for foreigners and is situated in Sohar in the Sultanate of Oman. It was founded in 1982 and is managed by the members of the Indian business community. It has students from kindergarten to Class 12 and is affiliated to Central board of secondary education, Central Board of Secondary Education[1] (CBSE, New Delhi), India.[1] It is one of fifteen schools managed by Indian embassy in Oman. The school is intended for students of Indian nationality, but some students are from Pakistan, Egypt, and Sri Lanka.

History

Indian School Sohar (ISS) was named after the student community attending it. Mrs Asha Sakrani the first principal of the school, saw the school grow from very humble beginnings. The school was founded for the education of children from India in and around Sohar. Initially there were 8 students and the school was run in a single room. Asha Sakrani was the only teacher available and the principal too. Students had to use mats and the only furniture was a single table and chair. The second and third years saw more students and more teachers. N. Subramanian took over as Principal in 1992 and later the school moved to a place near the souq. The CBSE affiliation for class ten came in 1994 and the subsequent year saw the first batch appearing in class ten board (CBSE)examination. In the year 2001 class twelve also became affiliated to CBSE thus increasing student strength and need for good education. The school has grown from one room in 1982 to two double storey blocks with 38 classrooms. It is located in the Al Hambar area of Sohar. Mr.Jayant Kumar Arora, who is from Gurgaon,Delhi, who is a very well qualified, disciplined and has remained an ex-principal of many well known schools in India joined as the Principal Of Indian School Sohar in the year 2007. Dr. Vinu Kumar joined the school later in 2008 as Vice-Principal. The school logo states - "From darkness to light" in Sanskrit and English, a lamp in the centre flanked by a pair of swans and an open book symbolizing learning. It does not have any parent teacher association which is in accordance to the local laws, however it does have a student council and a management committee with a parent representative on it.

Facilities

The School has well equipped Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer and Mathematics laboratories. The school library has 15,212 volumes. It also has an Art and crafts room. Audio-visual aids with 3-Dimensional multimedia animation teaching aids for classes six to eight, complement regular traditional teaching methods. This facility is expected to be available for other classes also in the near future. As of now, ISS offers CBSE format of education to 1800 students. A good auditorium, bigger playground with provision for football, cricket, gymnasium and a swimming pool are proposed. The number of students enrolled has soared in these two years, and there was an urgent need to expand the school. New room were added in the new block. At the same time the sections in each class were increased, with some having sections up to 'E' grade. The kindergarten classes are held in a separate building across the road. The management is trying to acquire another larger piece of land to expand the infrastructure.
