Ira Vannut (born September 18, 1994) is a Belgian figure skater. She is the 2011 Belgian ladies champion and the first female skater from Belgium to medal on the ISU Junior Grand Prix series, winning a bronze at the 2010 Pokal der Blauen Schwerter.[4]
Career
Vannut began skating by the age of four or five, after attending a public session with her mother. Later, her grandmother signed her up for a club where she began to take skating lessons.[5]
In the 2009-10 season, Vannut competed exclusively on the junior circuit, finishing 11th and 12th at her two junior Grand Prix assignments and 22nd at the 2010 Junior Worlds.
In 2010-11, she again skated in junior Grand Prix events. She finished 4th in her first event and then won the bronze medal at the 2010 Pokal der Blauen Schwerter in Dresden, Germany. She went on to win her first senior national title and was chosen for the Belgian team for the 2011 Europeans, where she won the qualifying round.[6] Vannut went on to a seventh place finish. She moved into the top ten at the 2011 Junior Worlds and concluded her season at the senior World Championships, where she placed 19th, achieving her goal of qualifying for the free skate.[5]
Vannut's role models in skating are Kevin van der Perren and Jenna McCorkell, with whom she shares a training rink. She also admires Mao Asada, Yu-Na Kim and Irina Slutskaya.[5]
Personal life
Vannut is a high school student and will graduate in 2012. In the past, she played tennis and practiced ballet, which she quit at age 14 in order to focus on her skating career.[5]
