The Indian High School, Dubai

The Indian High School (IHS) is the first expatriate educational institution to be established in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 1961[1] at which point it was called Bharatiya Vidyalaya by Hemalaka Behn. The land on which the School is located was granted to the School by the Late Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The school was established in 1961 with a view to providing education to children of Indian expats. The school is recognized by the Ministry of Education, Dubai, and is permanently affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi. It is a member of Dubai Quality Group and has acquired ISO : 9001 : 2000 Certification[2] . The certification by Lloyds Register of Britain acknowledges the quality management system and the contribution of the Indian community-run school in giving international quality education to expatriates. The school has also received Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished School and School Administration (2002 & 2005).

Today, the school has grown from its initial enrollment of 8 students to over 15,000 students. The centerpiece of the School complex is the Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, which can accommodate about 1800 guests[3] and has been the venue of many significant events.

The school is closely involved with the activities of the entire academic community in Dubai, and has special programmes aimed at creating awareness of the environment and enhancing ethical values.


Location

The school functions in two campuses. The Junior School at Al Garhoud accommodates Pre-Primary classes (Girls and boys 1-4). The Main School situated in Zabeel East, has Grades 5 to 12 (Girls) who commence in the morning shift (7:30am to 1:10pm) and Grades 5 to 10 (Boys) who commence in the afternoon shift (9:00am to 3:10pm). The school has a fleet of 81 air-conditioned buses to transport the students and staff.It is opening another 27 million (US) school under the name of the International Indian High School in 2011.

Facilities

There are a number of libraries and laboratories for reference work and research work respectively. The school also has a counseling center, school radio broadcasting named "Recess Radio" and medical facilities as well. The school has also introduced the smartboard technology to their students to help them learn better. A new security facility started to improve the overall IQ of a class. The school has an excellent ICT department which looks into all the technology related matters of students and teachers. The ICT has developed a new rubrics system called SAT (Student's Academic Tracker) which takes care of the evaluation of a student on all grounds[4] .

Recess Radio

Recess Radio is the school's own radio station, broadcast to the students during Recess Time. It includes a variety of programs like Singstar,Song Request Time,DJ Day,Gadget News and the Latest Buzz[5] .

Publications

The school brings out a number of publications; here are some of them:

  • The School brings out a quarterly journal called Light House
  • The School magazine entitled The Indian, containing contributions from the teachers and the students. This medium has been instrumental in developing literary, artistic and aesthetic talents of students of different age groups.
  • The Miscellany also gives an annual report of activities conducted and the progress made by the school in different areas. News bulletins are issued quarterly to supply required information to parents/ guardians and apprise them of activities of School.
  • A journal on environmental issues called Eco feel

Student Council

The school also has a Student Council Body elected by Teachers and Supervisors. The Student Council Body looks into student activities. The student council is elected in sections - Sub Junior, Junior, Senior. There are four houses - Emerald (green),Ruby (red), Sapphire (blue), Topaz (yellow). Each section of the Student Council comprises of the Head Girl/Boy, Assistant head girl/boy, Head Monitor, Assistant Head Monitor, Activity Co-ordinator, Assistant Activity Co-ordinator, Sports in-charge, Assistant sports in-charge, four House captains and four House Vice Captains and some more.

Staff and students

Mr. Ashok Kumar is the CEO of IHS. He holds a Masters of Education from the University of Toronto, Canada. Kumar has been awarded the Sheikh Hamdan Award for Best Administrator and the Indian National Award by the President of India. The school currently has about 780 teachers (and 200 other working staff) teaching about 15,000 students, being one of the largest schools in the region.

Recent News

The school was also declared 'excellent school, well led, with outstanding features' by the KHDA. The inspection was held in November 2010.Its rating was a good in the KHDA inspections.[6]
