.fr is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) in the Domain Name System of the Internet for France. Along with other domains like .re and .tf, it is administered by AFNIC.

Since December 6, 2011, the rules for registering French domains have changed. The owner of a French domain must not be based anymore in France. All European individuals, companies and organizations can register French domains. This change affects not only .fr, but all domains, which AFNIC manages:

*.re(Reunion)
*.wf (Wallis and Futuna)
*.yt (Mayotte)
*.pm(Saint Pierre et Miquelon)
*.tf (Terre et Australes Antarctique)

Domain names at the official com.fr subdomain, and also at asso.fr and tm.fr, will from December 6, 2011 no longer be registered. The owner of such domain names are permitted to renew their existing domains.

Registrations are processed via accredited registrars (see link below).
