Introduction

Jinling High School (Simplified Chinese: 金陵中学; pinyin: Jīnlíng Zhōngxué; shortname: 金中, Jin-Zhong), known as one of the most celebrated high schools all around China and the National Model Schools, is a high school with over 120 years' history in Nanjing, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China.

Jinling High School was founded by American missionaries in 1888 as Fowler Biblical School. It became affiliated with Jinling University (the University of Nanking) since 1910 and was therefore called Jinling High School until 1951, when the name was changed to Nanjing No. 10 Middle School. Having restored its original name "Jinling High School" in 1988 before its centennial anniversary, it is a key school in Jiangsu province, honored as a provincial and national model school. It is also one of the most prestigious and competitive national model schools in China.

For more than a century, over 100,000 graduates have been groomed. Among them are hundreds of eminent alumni, such as people's educationist Tao Xingzhi, master architect and the designer of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum Lv Yanzhi, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former honorary chairman of its core scholar’s presidium, the thermo physicist Wu Zhonghua, economists Wu Jinglian and Li Yining, biologist Fu Xin-Yuan, mathematician and leader of differential coefficient geometry Tian Gang, Nobel Laureate in Literature Gao Xingjian, and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Qi Kang (architect). The school is hence widely acclaimed as a "cradle for the elite".

In 1930s, the school used H. S. Thompson most famous work“Annie Lisle”as its school anthem. Huxiaoshi, a master of Chinese culture(Guo Xue) in the 20th century, wrote for the song. The school motto is “Honesty, Truth, Diligence, Benevolence”(known as Chinese is “诚、真、勤、仁”)

The school enjoys a central location in the city of Nanjing, with a campus of 50,000 square metres. It is the only one garden-like municipal high school in Nanjing.
