Technology One Limited (TechnologyOne) is a Queensland based maker of business-to-business software for the government, local government, education, health and community services, utilities, financial services and managed services sectors. It was founded by Adrian Di Marco, who is now the executive chairman.[3] TechnologyOne was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in 1999.
In addition to developing software solutions, the organisation also offers consulting and support services for all of its customers.[4] It now competes on an international scale with the world’s leading multinational software providers.[5]
History
In 1987, TechnologyOne founder, Adrian Di Marco, decided to use relational database technology to make accounting software.[6]
Seeking capital to support this venture, he approached numerous financial institutions and private organisations for financial backing, but was unable to find the required support.[7]
Adrian then approached investors, John and Dugald Mactaggart (of J.L. Mactaggart Industries,[7] a former customer).[8] With this financial backing, TechnologyOne was officially founded.
To use cheap office accommodation, TechnologyOne set up its first R&D centre at Mactaggart’s hide processing plant in Hemmant, Brisbane.[8] Among the busy operations of the hide plant, the company’s first software product, Finance One (now known as TechnologyOne Financials), was created.[9]
By mid-1988, the TechnologyOne team had hired enough staff to outgrow its first R&D centre and were looking to move into bigger quarters.[9]
For the next few years the project services team (now TechnologyOne Plus), which offers custom development software, gained large contracts with government and education organisations[citation needed] while development continued on Finance One.
In 1991, Finance One was officially launched. In 1992, TechnologyOne held its first user conference, with representatives from more than 30 organisations attending. This year also saw TechnologyOne gain accreditation to the Australian Software Standard AS3563, which was followed by the International Standard ISO9001 (Quality Management system) in 1994.[10]
In 1996 the first interstate office was opened in Sydney.
In 1996 and 1997, Finance One was recognised as the leading financial management accounting package in Australia.[11]
In 1999, TechnologyOne launched its student management product (TechnologyOne Student Management, formerly StudentOne), which was a joint venture with Curtin University of Technology. TechnologyOne Student Management quickly became a successful product for TechnologyOne, gaining contracts with Bond University, Flinders University and Southern Cross University.[12]
This was also a period of staff growth for the company, with offices opening in Melbourne, Victoria and Hobart, Tasmania in the late 1990s, the first international offices in New Zealand and Malaysia in 2000, and further offices in Perth, Western Australia and Adelaide, South Australia in 2001.
In late 2000, TechnologyOne made its first acquisition, Proclaim Software Pty Ltd, which was rebranded to Proclaim One (now TechnologyOne Property & Rating). By 2003, TechnologyOne added two more products, People One (now TechnologyOne Human Resource & Payroll) and TechnologyOne Supply Chain.
Throughout 2005 and 2006, TechnologyOne worked on its new generation Connected Intelligence platform.[13]
In 2006, TechnologyOne opened its first UK office. By 2009, TechnologyOne had expanded into each of its target vertical markets; government, local government, education, health and community services, utilities, financial services and managed services sectors.[14]
TechnologyOne acquired an enterprise content management provider, Avand Pty Ltd, and its product, DataWorks, in 2007, integrating it into its software suite and branding it as TechnologyOne Enterprise Content Management (ECM). In 2008, TechnologyOne made a further acquisition, Outcome Manager Pty Ltd, which provided TechnologyOne with a strategic performance planning product, Performance Planning.[15]
TechnologyOne Today
TechnologyOne is a company that develops, markets, implements and supports integrated software. The company provides a range of software to more than 800 customers in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, South Pacific and the United Kingdom.[16]
Customer service
TechnologyOne is one of the few enterprise solution vendors that does not use third parties to represent or sell its products.[3] TechnologyOne operates what it calls the Power of One business model - One vision, One vendor, One experience - taking total responsibility for the success of every customer’s investment. By developing, marketing, selling, implementing and supporting its own software solutions, TechnologyOne provides its customers with a single supplier and one service point of contact, and claims to guarantee the success of each customer’s implementation.[3]
TechnologyOne also works in close partnership with its customers to gain constant feedback, which is then included in new releases.[17] TechnologyOne’s latest technology release, TechnologyOne Mobile Solutions, has involved working with a number of local councils in Australia and New Zealand to develop a mobile solution for field workers.
In 2011, TechnologyOne invested a record $31.8 million in(R&D) on both existing and new products, which equates to approximately 20 per cent of revenue.[18]
Product lines
The company continues to invest in R&D.[19] The company has released, to date, four generations of its products. These are:
- Classic series – based on relational database/4GL technology
- Windows series – based on client–server technology
- eBusiness series – based on the internet and browser technology
- Connected Intelligence – its latest generation of products based on Microsoft’s .Net technology and the concept of the smart internet client[13]
With each new generation of software, TechnologyOne has migrated all its customers to the platform, for no additional licence fees.[citation needed]
Connected Intelligence

In 2005, TechnologyOne launched its latest technology platform, Connected Intelligence (Ci), a platform that combines internet with client–server technology.[20] This new platform ensures upgrades are rolled out quickly and provides the ability to tailor information to individual users. The Ci platform has also significantly cut down the need to train existing and new staff, as the internet-based solution is both familiar and easy to use.[21] With the Ci platform now developed and implemented with a suite of 12 products, TechnologyOne staff have begun research on the next generation product, which will build on the Ci platform.[16]
Cloud Computing
In late 2010, announced its intention to bring its cloud computing platform to market.[22]
The new TechnologyOne Cloud Computing Suite will be built, hosted and delivered in the cloud. Depending on customers’ requirements, they will have the option of hosting their software externally on the cloud or internally using their existing infrastructure.
TechnologyOne already delivers its Ci solutions in the cloud, but to take advantage of all the benefits of cloud technology, the software vendor is completely restructuring its business model and re-engineering its software from the ground up.
TechnologyOne will be unveiling its complete cloud offering at its user conference, Evolve, in February 2012, following an internal pilot.
TechnologyOne Executive Chairman, Adrian Di Marco, said TechnologyOne still recognised there were concerns about security from customers. To alleviate these concerns, TechnologyOne plans to have data centres located both in Australia and offshore.
