Fotbal Club Municipal Târgu Mureş is a football club based in Târgu Mureş, in central-northern Romania. It was founded in 2004[1] under the name "Trans-Sil Tîrgu Mureş" and since 2010 is playing in Romania's top football league, Liga I.
History
FCM Târgu Mureş is the city's main football team, a successor in this sense of CS Târgu Mureş (dissolved in 1960) and ASA Târgu Mureş (dissolved in 2007), two great clubs that sum up the football history in Târgu Mureş in the second part of the 20th century.
The club was founded in 2004 under the name "Trans-Sil Târgu Mureş" and played four seasons in the Liga III.
In the summer of 2008 the club changed its name to the current one and bought a Liga II spot from the newly promoted Unirea Sânnicolau Mare.
2008-09 season
In the club's first season in the Liga II, FCM outperformed the predictions and played well throughout the season, winning 16 games and drawing 9, while scoring 54 goals and receiving 27, the fewest in the Seria 2. At the end of the season the team was very close to promote to the Liga I, finishing 3rd with 57 points, just 7 away from the second best-placed team in the series, Internaţional Curtea de Argeş.
2009-10 season
The club finished 1st in the series with 69 points, winning 20 games, drawing 9 and losing 3. The team scored 52 goals and allowed 20 (like the year before the fewest goals allowed in their series) and was promoted for the very first time in its history to the Liga I. 18 years passed since the last city's presence in the Romanian top football league (1991-1992 season with ASA).
2010-11 season
FCM outperformed itsfelf and finished 9th in the table, in front of last years champions, CFR Cluj. Ioan Ovidiu Sabău led the team to a fantastic run, at one point being in the run for a UEFA Europa League spot.
2011-12 season
FCM plans to finish better than last season, a UEFA Europa League spot being targeted. For that, it must finish 1-4 in the table, or win the Romanian Cup.
